Default I'm New, Hello!

Hi, I'm new to the forum and owning a hamster. Looked after guinea pigs way back when, but have always had cats and dogs. I love having pets and recently joined the ranks of hamster ownership.

She is a Russian Dwarf and her name is Suzie (my 7yr old daughters unoriginal idea ) although I affectionately call her Mrs. Wiffles because of her wiffley nose... hence my username .

I would have got 2 females as I believe Russians like companionship, but the shop only had one. She lives in a tank as opposed to a cage as I feel this is the most security I can give her from our cat.

I look forward to learning more about looking after her although I think we are doing well and she seems happy and content.

Hi welcome. Sounds like your daughter has great taste in names . Looking forward to reading more.

Oh I removed the other intro topic as it seemed to be duplicated.

Aww cute, she looks like my little Poppet (but with more eyes lol)

I think they often fight anyway if you get 2 - I have Poppet on his own as he was in the rescue bit at pets at home with only one eye so he must have been attacked by one of his siblings But he is quite happy on his own and has a huge cage to run around which he loves

How can you tell please? The shop told me she was 'just a Russian Dwarf' even though I asked for specifics.

Our feinds have the same type of hamster and were told she is a 'winter white' even though she has never changed colour.

Please tell me as I'd love to learn more.

I would also like to know this, as I really want to know if Poppet is a winter white, a campbells or a hybrid (as he was from pets at home!)! And Poppet looks the same as Mrs Wiffles

i think campbells and winter whites both belong to the category russian dwarf and the pet stores only sell them as russians. most of them are hybrids anyway. if you want a "pure" campbell or winter white you probably have to go to a breeder...

Most per shop hamsters are actually hybrids somewhere along their lines as hybridisation produces some pretty colours which is why the commercial breeders have done this. Healthwise there can be some issues though so you should never knowingly breed hybrids.
When looking at a hamster you can, with experience give an opinion of what it most closely matches
If you look at this site you can see pics of the dwarf hamsters and see what the colours of pure animals look like but naturally there are good and bad examples of each which can 'overlap' somewhat.
Most pet shops just sell as Russian Dwarfs as they do not know any better.
The Campbells and the Winter White in the wild would occupy different regions in Russia and would never interbreed in the wild. They look distinctively different in the pure form but are close enough genetically to be interbred.
Because we have shown for a number of years you can pick out colours quite easily
