Need a furry gentle friend
Hi! I am new. I have a disability and would like a little friend to hold and play with when I am sitting in my chair in the evening. I can't move very quickly either. A long time ago I had a Teddy Bear hamster which was a male and very gentle. Do any of you have any recommendations? I was bitten very badly by a ferret a few years ago so I am kinda turned off of ferrets for now. Thanks and looking forward to having fun on this site
Jeannie

Hi Jeannie and welcome.
Not sure if we have anyone in your area but a Syrian hamster would certainly make a nice pet although they can be quite busy when they are young.
Chinese hamsters are very gentle and laid back and seem to like sitting on people so that may be an option.
I hope you find something you like.

Syrian hamsters are great, I have 2
The only thing I would say is that they can be fast when they want to be! It took me ages to get used to holding them but as you've already had a hamster you probably already know how to hold one

Thank you very much. I will see if my local pet stores have syrian or chinese. What do you know about Teddy Bear hamsters in general?

Re: Need a furry gentle friend
Well the teddy bears arent they the long haired ones? Well i had one; (RIP x) and he was really friendly, and loved to come out of the cage, mine came out a bit in the daytime as well and he was very active on his wheel when he was a young hamster. He use to climb up my clothes and go in and out of my sleeves - there so friendly, if handled at a young age. Although mine did bit me once because i scared it by accident.

Isn't teddy bear hamster just another name for syrian hamsters in general? I could be wrong though
