Default My First Thread

Hello this is my first posting

After nagging and nagging my husband I had my first hamster for xmas.
His name is Hans (After the Speedway rider Hans Anderson) and he is a Syrian.

I also have 2 guinea pigs ( Crumpy and Lenko ) who have free rome of the house and who love following Hans around when he is in his ball.

What I would like to know is would this be stressing him out, he seems to enjoy it as he can pick a pick up a bit of speed in his ball and leave them standing. They are all getting on really well and he likes to go and have a nose round where they sleep and when he is in his cage they go and say hi.
I would never let Hans out of his ball or cage to wonder free with the guinea pigs.
I would also like to know how long on a daily basis should he be in his ball, it's normally bout an hour in the evening and then he goes back in his cage and then goes on his wheel.

Would appreciate any help or feedback.

Welcome to our community.

I am sure he will get used to the guinea pigs, but I would think it would take a while, maybe a long while. As they would be seen as a threat to him.

As to the ball, an hour is a fair amount. Really any time rolling around is great as it gives them time to stretch their legs and explore. That said, you might want to let him stay out a little longer if he is heading for the wheel as soon as he gets back in his cage. If you leave him in too long, you will find him sleeping in a corner. Best not to do that.

Welcome to the forum.
Hans sounds like a cutie
Personally I would not let him near the guinea pigs. I think they might scare him a little. Syrian hamsters are by nature solitary animals and do not actively seek companionship from other creatures so he does not need to go near them really.
Ball running needs to be in small sessions as hamsters need to stop and rest, eat, drink and wee especially youngsters and they cannot do this in a ball.
You should take him out for a good break back home after 10-15 mins in the ball.
Looking forward to meeting Hans and hearing more about him.
