Unhappy Mercedes possibly died of wet tail

One of the hamsters in our family died tonight of what I believe was wet tail. She stopped drinking water over a week ago and we were giving her water through a syringe. When she got diarrhea, we gave her Pedialyte, milk, honey, water, and yogurt multiple times during the day and overnight. Friday we thought she was going to die as she wouldn't open her eyes and just laid on her side breathing hard. By nightfall, we decided to not continue the hydration regimen we had been doing as we believed she would die before morning. Saturday morning her eyes were open and she was walking around a bit. Yesterday she seemed much better and more energetic. Tonight while giving her water, she drank a couple of drops and died in my oldest son's hand. I have in my library The Merck Manual of Vet medicine which I recommend to all pet lovers. Wet tail is very often fatal and even though we caught it when Mercedes had her first and last diarrhea episode, she wasn't able to survive it. As small as a hamster is, the electrolyte balance that is disturbed when they get diarrhea is more often than not going to lead to the animal's death. They don't have a large fluid reserve in their systems.

Sorry for your loss, hope everyone is doing ok? Sounds like she couldn't have received any better care than you gave her!

Sorry for your loss. Must've been tough and I hope your all coping OK.

An immediate vet appointment would be recommended next time this happens I think ..
