Hello-really need help
Hello I'm going to get my first hamster (Syrian) very soon so I don't own one yet.
I have been setting up his cage for and I saw a video that said I could make flavored chews by soaking them in hamster safe fruits and veggies.
I soaked mine in strawberries but now Ive read sugar is bad for them and I have no idea if the wood has the strawberries sugar or not.
This might be a no brainer question but I've tried googling what I could I think of with no results. (Ex. Can wood soak sugar, etc..)
Anyway thanks for reading and sorry my introduction is kind of long-this will be my first pet so I've been trying my best to make a healthy cage.

Re: Hello-really need help
Natural sugar is perfectly safe, and besides Syrian hamsters are not prone to diabetes anyways.Artificial sweeteners and such are very bad though,so I can see where the concern and misunderstanding may come from! Also,it's very important to consider that even if your hamster did somehow have diabetes it is certainly important to have some sugar in moderation. This usually comes from the actual diet though, but with Syrian hamsters there is no major risk of diabetes,so fruits and such are in my opinion practically an essential treat and are really good for dyeing woods with! It's a lot better than things like yogurt drops or other artificially sweetened storebought treats.

Re: Hello-really need help
Welcome to the forum.
I agree a little sugar from fruit is fine for a syrian occasionally, my only concern with soaking wooden chews is that they may begin to go mouldy & that is harmful to hamsters.
Some never really chew wood & if it is soaked or rubbed with something tasty will quickly lose interest again.
You won't know for a while what your future ham will enjoy chewing but it's always worth putting just a plain wooden chew in the cage, you can also try apple wood or hazel sticks, whimzees (also known as Antos dog chews) or a piece of dog biscuit which most hams enjoy chewing.
