New and excitable hamster owner!
Hi there, I just got a male Syrian hamster yesterday, (I haven't named him yet) and I wanted to join this community because reading other people's threads has already helped me out so much.

Re: New and excitable hamster owner!
Welcome! I just brought home my first Syrian hamster last week. Years ago I had tiny little dwarf hamsters, so I'm having fun learning about the larger hamsters.

Re: New and excitable hamster owner!
Hi everyone! I'm hoping to get some pictures up soon. I've named him Little Dude (LD for short!) because that's what I kept calling him when I couldn't think of a name!! He's so sweet and ate carrot from my hand today! I can't wait until we're best buddies!

Re: New and excitable hamster owner!
Hello and welcome! It is exciting isn't it? Try and be patient though as sometimes they can feel a bit rushed by our excitement and get a bit stressed. It's usually good to give them 2 or 3 days to settle into their cage, find out where everything is, build a nest and scent mark their territory. Then go on to offering treats by hand (which are doing ). Sometimes this is best done through the bars at first or with your hand at the entrance to the cage as if you put your hand in the cage they can feel threatened. But see how it goes! Don't clean anything or rearrange things for the first two weeks - they need that time to start feeling secure. If things get a bit stinky you can 'spot clean' the wee corner and add another handful of substrate
Congratulations on your new hammy.
