Hi!
Hi!
I bought my very first hammy yesterday so I am a complete beginner, he's a Syrian called Alfred, Alfie for short
I'm hoping I can learn a lot from you on here, you all seem so knowledgeable

Re: Hi!
Hello! I also bought my hamster yesterday - he's a brown short haired Syrian with a white band. He's a very nervous little fella and is currently still nameless. It's nice to meet you and I look forward to getting to know you and your bundle of fluff I'm not an expert by any means but if you need any advice, feel free to ask! Everyone here is lovely and will help you wherever possible

Re: Hi!
I'm still waiting on him to build up some confidence, but he's such a sweetie, he's black with a white tummy and a ring around his back He took some sunflower seeds from me today and I can tell he's itching to get out but I can't trust him completely yet so I've got him whizzing around in his ball straight from the cage at the moment

Re: Hi!
He sounds like a sweetheart My hamster has no confidence at all yet - I've been talking to him so he starts to get used to my voice but as soon as he sees me (I haven't been up to the cage when he's out but I can see him if I sit up in bed) he runs off to his nest. It's only day two so fingers crossed he'll get a bit more confident with some more time.. I'm glad you've made so much progress with him already

When he's ready, a great place to let him run around & play, is in the bathtub. There is very little chance of escape and it is a large area for him to stretch his legs & play. I lay down an old sheet and cover the entire bottom of the tub (including the drain). Then I fill it with toys & let her go to town This works well for my dwarf Ari, but my 5 month old Syrian, Butters, is still a bit timid yet.

Re: Hi!
I tried him in the bath after a run around in his ball and he loved it! I haven't got a free standing wheel yet and I don't think his current one is big enough anyway (came with the cage) so I'm going to get one tomorrow along with a few more toys, but I folded the towel in half and he was tunnelling through the middle of it. He took a few treats from me and let me stroke him so I got in with him for a bit and he was climbing all over! Definitely more positive than yesterday when he managed to escape and we spent 45 minutes trying to get him out from under the sofa! :/ Beautyandthebeast - Alfie was really timid until today, he's being a lot more bold. I've been leaving a website called 'rainy cafe' on as I hope it will get him used to general noise and human sounds, and I've been talking to him too
He's been pooing right next to his nest - is that normal? I've only just managed to spot clean today as I couldn't see where he'd been doing it and didn't want to disturb his stash
