Hi, new here!
Hello. I stalked this website for a few weeks learning a whole bunch of info on hamsters, preparing for getting ours. This forum has been such a help! We decided on a Syrian, because we have kids and wanted the recommended "friendlier" hamster. After I couldn't get my hands on other cages recommended on here, I found somewhere nearby that sold FOP cages, and I bought a FOP Charlie Criceto tank. It's nice and roomy, and has some fun additions. I also bought an 8" Wodent Wheel, other fun toys recommended by people here (they should be arriving soon), Oxbow & Vitakraft foods, as well as some yummy treats.
About 3 weeks ago when I first started researching, we went to our local small pet shop, which is a very good store, and have quality animals/pets. We get our fish for our tank from there as well. We spotted a cute grey/cream colored Syrian hamster there, but it had said "reserved." When I went back to browse last week, he was still there but it no longer said reserved, so I asked about him. They said he was 4 months old, and I felt so sad for him since he was in a small tank with no toys, or house, and I told my husband "We have to save him." After getting the tank set up, I went to get him today! He is so adorable, sweet and friendly. He is currently adjusting to his new home.
The funny part in all of this is that we are keeping him hidden from our kids in our walk-in closet until Christmas because my daughter asked for a hamster for Christmas. Even though it is over a month away, I couldn't wait to save that poor guy from that little tank at the pet store. So, he is currently nameless until our daughter names him... But I'm going to push for "Storm." Because he looks like a grey fluffy rain cloud.
Anyway, Hi! And thanks for all of the advice and wonderful info on here!
Here is a pic of the nameless little guy who I'll call Storm for now! Haha!

Re: Hi, new here!
Welcome to HC, they give the best help and advice to everyone
He is so adorable, keep talking to him and let him settle in, get him use to your voice. After a week or when he is ready slowly introduce treats with your hands. important let him come to you. Once he is confident with your hands then try stroking him, but always talk to him. Remember taming takes times but every hamster is different.
Also introduce a little bit of boiled chicken as a treat, also they usually love broccoli and carrots. Have a look at what is safe for hamsters to eat on the forum.

Re: Hi, new here!
Oh my word no wonder you had to take him home. He is lovely. All that fluff and that cuute little face. Your daughter is going to be delighted.
You will be able to get him used to being handled as well. Couldnt be better.
Looking forward to loads (and loads) more pictures of the little sweetie.

Re: Hi, new here!
Thanks everyone! Any idea what his coloring is called?? I dont know the proper terms. His eyes are dark, but have a reddish tint. Here's another picture. Thanks!
