New rescue Serbian hamster

Hello I'm a first time hamster owner and have a very friendly hamster from a well known rescue, he is believed to be one year old. I'm quite upset because I got the qute hamster cage from omlet and the rehomeing place said it would be fine for him,I've since discovered that hamsters need more floor space and this one has two levels it's such a shame because it would be great if it was longer in length.you see I trusted what the rescue told me. Do you people on here think I should try and get another one although I've looked and they all seem a similar size. Look forward to hearing your thoughts thankyou

What size is your cage? There are lots of ideas in the Housing section of this forum. It depends on which country you live in because cages do vary a great deal.

I was looking at the qute as it seemed ideal but luckily for me I joined the forum before I bought one. There are some really good cages out there and not all of them need cost a lot of money. If you have a look in the housing section of the forum you'll get a good idea of what members use.
For barred cages, some use the Barney and the Alaska cages. Plastic tanks include the zoozone 1 & 2 and duna multy/multy maxi. And plenty of people use bin cages - a plastic storage bin (for example the Samla for ikea) with either a mesh panel inserted in the side or the lid for ventilation. Just make sure whatever you use is tall enough for the right sized wheel. A dwarf will need an 8" wheel & a Syrian will need an 11"/12" wheel. The wheels that come with cages are very rarely big enough.

The Qute is such a cool idea, it's a real shame it's not the right size. Disappointing that a rescue would give you a small guideline size but outside of hobbyist breeders and forums like this one the level of knowledge on keeping hamsters is generally pretty low.

Another lovely rescue I know of (SinNyx on here) has this handy image that I show people a lot

Living World Eco Habitat is an excellent choice! It's heartbreaking when you spend money on a cage and then find it is too small - happened to me too! What are you going to do with the Qute? You could maybe re-use the tube from it as a floor toy, and the plastic bin at the bottom could be useful as a play bin. The rest could be converted into storage maybe?

Do you mean a Syrian hamster? I'm not quite sure what a Serbian Hamster is.
