Thought I'd just quickly ask for some new taming advice rather than start an entire new thread..

Since we brought him home Faolan has always been really confident and bold. There were a few times we had to put our hands in the cage to adjust things but he never seemed bothered by this, but rather curious and wanting to come up and see what we were doing. We've had him for almost a week and this has been consistent behaviour.

However, I put my hand in the cage earlier to adjust his water bottle and he just started really freaking out and started jumping at my hand and at the corner of the cage where I was standing? I'm just a bit confused because he's seemed fine this entire time but now seems to be more territorial over my hand being in the cage?

What was he doing when you put your hand in the cage?
Ir's possible you may just have startled him.
Taming can be a bit of a two steps forward one step back kind of process sometimes so don't be too concerned, just go slow & steady, back off a little if he seems upset by anything & try to keep to a routine with anything you do with him.

At the time he was near the water bottle, but he'd never been funny with us putting our hands in so I *Stupidly* didn't think anything of it. And the time after that I was trying to put food in his bowl while he was on his wheel, and just freaked out and started jumping around

When I first started taming Nova, she would freak out if I put my hand into the cage. She would run around, jump into her wheel and just totally freak out. I tried to make it a better experience for her by placing a sunflower seed to her, or on the floor close to her when I put my hand into the cage so she didn't see me as a threat and associated me with yummy things!

It took a while but eventually she was persuaded. It will vary with each hamster though. Nova has been the hardest hamster I've ever had to tame as she was so jumpy to begin with. Fingers crossed he will begin to learn pretty fast!

Thanks aymee! I'm really enjoying following you and Nova's progress, and it makes me feel better about being patient with Faolan and knowing everything will turn out okay in the end!

No problem! Aww thank you. It really will be worth it. I know it can be quite frustrating because they're so cute and you just want a bond straight away. It is extremely rewarding once they learn that you're not a threat and they start to enjoy coming out for play time.
