I like the cage, a good size and the setup looks good too I agree with Gemma about the substrate, the big advantage with a cage like that is that you can put in a nice deep layer. Most hamster's love to burrow and with that type of cage you can sometimes see them sleeping inside their burrow through the glass, which I'm sure your little girl would love! Needs to be nice and deep though. While it takes a good amount of substrate the advange is that you only need to clean out a third of it on cleaning day and then mix in some fresh substrate - all round it actually works out cheaper to have a bigger cage with more substrate

That cage looks lovely! What model is it? An ExoTerra? You have a good assortment of toys and things in there, I might suggest more tubes? Toilet roll tubes, plastic tubes, bendy tubes, crinkle tubes any kind of tubes

And thirding the recommendations for really nice deep substrate. Maybe also a sandbath?

I managed to get a picture of one in a wheel, just want to make sure the wheel is ok for the time being whilst I wait for some larger wooden ones to arrive in the post, if not I can remove the 2 current wheels for the time being. Her back looks straight to me?

Wow is that the Skyline Marrakesch? I might have to pick your brains about that! I fancied one at one point (has mouse mesh on the lid and I was looking for a mouseproof cage a while back - which might not actually be relevant after we move!). Just wondered, when the top is closed, is there a gap along the back where the top meets the back panel?

It's a great cage anyway - is the the 100cm or 80cm one?

Your set up looks good - seems to have two of everything. I'd second deeper substrate. The advantage of a solid sided cage like that is you can put 15cm or more of substrate in without it spilling over. In Germany the cage is advertised as being suitable for meeting their minimum welfare requirement of 20cm of substrate. With that amount they may dig some tunnels. But then if you have it deep you have to either have something to support the heavy items, in case they tunnel under them, or have them partly subterranean kind of. Or you could just have one deep area and the rest as now to get round supporting the heavy items bit.

They look fine in the Silent Spinners. Is it the 8" Karlie wheels you are getting?

Hey, yes it is the 100cm Marrakesch, very good quality so should last a long time. The front glass panel can be slid out upwards by just loosening a screw each side, this feature will make it even easier when cleaning the tank.

When the lid is closed there is about a 1mm gap between the lid and glass so nothing could escape. I will look to add another bag of substrate shortly but like you was also worried about the wood huts possibly causing tunnels to collapse. The wood wheels I have ordered are 15cms, the current mini silent wheels are only 12cms, I will just buy larger wheels again in the future if need be.

Thank u all for the comments so far.

Hi & congrats on your two new hams!

That's a nice cage but I would agree with Gemma about the substrate, robos really do love to dig & burrow so put as much in as you can, with that type of cage you should have no problem with that.
They probably will outgrow those wheels fairly quickly so I'd replace them sooner rather than later tbh, the wonderland wheels should be really nice for them but you will need to give them a coat of plastikote to waterproof them before they use them.
I would add in some toilet roll tubes & an eggbox or two with a couple of holes cut in as they love to play in those.
I would watch carefully to make sure they don't get territorial over those houses, you might do better with small cardboard boxes always with two hole for entrance/exit so one can't get trapped by the other.
Also as Gemma says keep another cage ready just in case they do need to be separated, hopefully they will live together happily but unfortunately with pairs they do sometimes fall out.
