Default Hello from a nervous new hamster owner!

Hi everyone, my name is Julie and I am new at caring for a Syrian Hamster.

I love animals and sadly after my Cavalier King Charles Spaniel passing 11 weeks ago today (still very raw and hard to deal with) and little girl missing him so much, my partner and I decided she could choose and name a hamster as getting a dog is too soon.

Anyway, I live in Scotland with my fiancé and miracle 3 1/2 year old daughter. I love to cook, bake and play on my Yamaha Tyros keyboard (or should say use to love playing it but haven't had time just now).

The reason my little one is a miracle is due to being told just over 17 years ago that I would never have children and after years of trying just had to face up to the fact it wasn't to be, no matter how desperate I was to have children. Then when seeing about a hysterectomy due to various health issues I felt unwell and basically to cut a long story short, found out I was expecting twins, sadly lost one and have my wee miracle who keeps me very busy! I generally don't keep very well due to different illnesses and life can be difficult at times as my other half is in the Royal Navy and can be away 6 months at a time. Last year is the first time he's missed Christmas with our little one and also her birthday this year. It's hard for her to understand why her daddy goes away to work and can't always come home compared to her granddad going to work and being able to come and visit.

So, we now have a Syrian hamster and hope that we can do everything possible to give her a happy life.

Welcome to HC. Very sorry about your dog, though I'm sure she lived a good life and will be dearly missed. But congrats on getting your first syrian. They are such wonderful pets haha! I (and I'm sure others) would love to see some photos of your little hammy. Looking forward to seeing you around on the forum!! Also, very touching story about yourself and your family, you seem so strong

I really do hope so, although I feel bad as not been able to get her in her ball or run the past two nights due to me being poorly but hoping to get her out tonight!

Thank you for welcoming me! I had Charlie since he was 7 weeks old and to have to decide to have him put to sleep was the hardest thing to do but I had to think of him and not have him suffer as well as my daughter getting traumatised with his passing out etc. He looked after me and it would be good if there was visiting hours at rainbow bridge soI could give him a hug. I have to admit life is hard at times, especially since I have a few health issues but our daughter keeps me going and makes life worth living. I come across as being strong to most people but most days, I'm falling apart inside. At the end of the day there are people worse off than me!

Also, where is the best place to put up pictures of Applejack?

You could always start a thread in the syrian section if you want to share more photos or stories about your little one.
