Hello All,
New here and just wanted to share my little story. Found a couple hamster sites and there seems to be a lot of activity on here so I thought I would register
I've been poking around for the last couple days on the site reading stuff like DIY cages and just all the cool stuff everyone has been posting.
About a week ago I heard chewing coming from my kitchen. I noticed 1 of my cats sitting near my refrigerator so I went to investigate. I looked down along side the cupboard and my fridge and noticed a square hole that was in the drywall on the back wall (I live in an apartment). Upon looking I seen a little nose peeking through and chewing through the hole in the drywall trying to open it up so he would fit. I thought it was a deer mouse. Since I couldn't get back to the hole to block it off or stop this "mouse" from chewing I filled a squirt bottle with water and shot him with water. He stopped for about a minute then came back to it so I shot him again. This went on for about 10 minutes, me shooting him with water about 5 times total lol.
He finally decided to stop but then I heard up farther in the wall behind my stove the sound of chewing and ripping of drywall paper. I was like great! He's chewing a brand new hole to get in. He was very persistent to get in even with a cat staring him down.
It got quiet for about 10 minutes then I heard a loud squeal. I turned around in my computer chair to see my cat had got a hold of what I found out to be a hamster! So I jumped up quickly to stop my cat from harming the hamster anymore that he might have already.
He ran under a little table. I got down on the floor to look at him and I still wasn't sure what he was. As you will see in the video I will post down below I called him a gerbil
I reached my hand towards him and he wasn't scared of me and came towards my hand. I pulled back as I wasn't sure if the thing would bite me or not. I used to raise mice when I was younger and also had a few rats. 1 of the rats I had was not nice and couldn't be held or pet and I remember how hard he bit so I was leary.
I grabbed a mop bucket I had near and a large envelope I received in the mail and scooped him in to the bucket. I did some quick searches on the internet to figure out he was a Syrian Hamster. I did some searches on the internet too just to see if anyone had posted anything about losing their hamster and found nothing. Checked craigslist etc and checked again today.
Anyways I knew I couldn't leave the little guy in the bucket so I ran to walmart and picked him up a little cage, bedding, and food to put him in for now.
He has a sliced ear that was pre-existing and not from my cat as it was already healed up.
I am moving soon to a new state so if no one claims him he will be coming with me
I have already given him a name "Opsu".
Once I move I plan on making him a nice new huge cage. The cage from walmart is just way to small for my liking and probably his too. He needs room to explore and play!
Heres the 3 videos I took of him chewing through drywall, in the bucket, then in new cage. I was a bit worried about him chewing that drywall, its been a week now and he seems to be ok. I have pet him several times and held him once so far. He's sooo soft
This first video is when I thought it was a mouse chewing through the drywall
