Default Hi from Bao & I

Hi! I've kept Syrian and Roborovski hamsters before but it's been quite a while now & I recently decided I needed a hamster in my life again. Although I had planned to get a Syrian hamster, on Friday evening I went home with a lovely little Chinese hamster from the adoption section of P@H, who was said to be under 6 months old. His previous owner called him Albert, but I have decided to call him Bao - a Chinese boys' name meaning 'treasure'. I have never met a Chinese hamster before and Bao is fascinating!

Bao in his Silent Spinner (which isn't very silent at all & I can't work out why)

All starfish-y

Emerging from his snuggle pouch this evening when I let him run around in the bath

Welcome to the forum. Bao is a lovely hammie and is a dominant spot Chinese. It is a nice choice of name too. Silent spinners should be pretty quiet at first so I would return it if you have just got it. Problems can be with the yellow attachment to the stand. Check there is no crack in this allowing the wheel to droop and bang against the stand. If you have attached to the bars it may be better to change position as they can bang against the bars or tray. Sometimes the hams run so fast they bounce on the floor. Put a bit of kitchen roll underneath to muffle the noise. Unscrew the yellow attachment in the middle and make sure it is properly aligned. If all else fails and it is still noisy then contact the manufacturer and they normally replace the faulty one with no problem at all.

Thank you all for the lovely welcome! And thanks souffle for the Silent Spinner advice - I'll check it out this evening.

Bao is rather gorgeous if I say so myself... last night I told him that I wanted to eat him up, and he looked straight at me with his enormous raisin eyes and I felt quite bad.

He is lovely, chinese hamsters are such fun to keep and I especially like the colourings of the dominant spot.
