Hi there, I recently joined the site and I can't wait to meet some other animal fans here!
I'd just like to share my general experience with hamsters before I lurk the forums to ask for some opinions and advice. My first hamster was a long-haired Syrian (the lovely boy pictured as my avatar/profile pic) called Coconut. He only bit once (was my own fault - I was young and naive so stuck my finger in within the first few days of bringing him into his new environment) and became such a wonderfully tame hamster. A few months after Coconut sadly passed, my brother adopted a short-haired Syrian hamster from the same pet shop and named him Max. Unfortunately, we got bad news from the vets when Max was just 10 months old that he had bowel cancer and that he only had a week to live - so we decided to put the poor fellow to rest.
Recently, I have been working with the range of hamsters and other small mammals at college (syrians, dwarfs) and hope to be adopting two Russian dwarf hamsters from the college within the next three weeks or so. I'm looking forward to bringing them home very much and I hope that all goes smoothly for them in their new home upon arrival. I'm striving to make their enclosure encouraging for their natural behaviour but also safe at the same time (of course!). So far I have bought food supplies, bedding, disinfectant and one hamster bowl for them. I plan to order the rest online at Zooplus and a few other websites later on.
So if you have owned dwarf hamsters in the past or present, I would absolutely love to hear from you! For example, do you have any recommendations? I've bought Carefresh natural hamster bedding in the hope that it will be good for them to dig about in - have you ever used this before?
PS. Lastly, I thought I'd explain my username: C stands for Coconut, M for Max and Maple (one Russian dwarf hamster) and W is for Willow (other Russian dwarf hamster).
