Hello Hamsterlover, welcome to the Hamster Central forum!

I find that in the past the best way to convince my mother was to get her when she was PMSing and offered to buy her Cinnabons from the mall of she let me have the animal lol, and its worked in the past lol...

Anyhow.. Another way I would go about doing this is making a list of all the reasons why I should have one and also a list of things that I have done that show I am responsible. I also would read up as much as I could about the animal so I could impress my mother buy showing her how much I had read and learned as well as showing her how much I am really thinking about it and want it.

If your in college you give the whole talk about how you aren’t a child anymore and that you are an adult and she shouldn’t treat you as such anymore, then you’ll probably get from her the line about " so long as your under my roof!" blah blah blah lol..

If you are going to get a hamster I suggest you do get a job on the side to pay for it, especially in the event it needs a vet, it certainly doesn’t sound like your mother would be too happy to pay for more vet bills, and being in college you are old enough to take that kind of responsibility yourself.

Anyway there are some of my techniques of the past.. I still use them on my hubby hehe.. Well besides the PMS thing.

Good Luck!

Default Welcome HamsterLover

Hello, welcome to HC. Parents huh! They can be so frustrating at times, but then I bet they say the same about us Candace has given you the best way to convinve your mother you are prepared for the extra responsibility of a hamster - bribery and providing evidence Do you have any pets in your room currently - is this where your hamster would live? Do you keep record of how much time you spend with your pets currently? Does your mum have to clean them out often - be honest! It may take a few weeks but if you are serious and stick to a good care regime with your other pets and mention hamster research you are doing but don't bug her permanently for one of your own she may become more ameniable to the idea. We have a contest just now to write an article or piece of literature/poem/song etc. about hamster - you could do this and how her your entry? For more information on the contest check the News and Announcements Section

I have 2 rabbits. I spend at least an hour a day with them - I clean them out twice a day and feed them. Only when I am realy ill does my mum feed the rabbits (only happened twice so far) and even then, I didn't get her to clean them out.

We have 4 cats (2 grown up cats and 2 kittens). The kittens are my step dad's, but I clean their litter tray, feed them etc. And I feed the adult cats.

She says she thinks another pet may leave me with less time to do my college work (I will be starting college in Sept).

How can I convince her it wont?

thanks

Tell her that Syrian hamsters are solitary creatures anyway and sleep during tha daytime so you would be able to spend time with your hamster when your done your college work as this is just when a hamster is waking up normally.

That's why you should read up on then as much as you can - learn about them and tell your mother about them so she can understand why one would be a great pet for you.

oh I have been reading up....but don't want to give her a few facts at a time... I want to give her all the facts at once.

I am going to have a chat with her tomorow, sit her down, make her a nice cup of green tea (her favoutite) and chat to her in a calm mature manner... wish me luck.

this site is full of great information and I have been watching all the posts over the past week or so.

thanks

Good luck and don't give up if she refuses tomorrow - show her you are serious about this and I am sure she will come round eventually.

Welcome to HC - the others have given you great advice, I only wanted to add that at the end of the day I think it's really important to respect parent's wishes when you're living in their house. So don't give up but just make sure you can answer and worries your mum might have about it and be respectful about asking. Good luck!
