Default New to hamsters =)

Hello lovelies,

I'm Lexy, I'm a friend of "Helenp"! She's rather fab isn't she
Anyways, she's been telling me all about her little hammies, and how funny and crazy they are so I think I might like one myself. I already have 12 guineapigs and a rabbit, so veg is not an issue

I'm thinking a golden hamster, as I only want one at the moment.

I'm completely new, the only things I know are: Hamster mix, small veg, access to water and hammie mix at all times. they're nocturnal, so don't startle them in the day and they probably wont bite you. They need to be able to run alot, so a ball is a good idea? Syrrians are the biggest and don't like company. aaannnddd... that's about all I know. I was reading about cage sizes, and 60X30 is the smallest? i'll get bigger than that, the biggest I can afford Lol... And they'll get lots of time out anyways.

All advice brilliant.. um...

oh, I'm 19, married, living in peterborough. Incase anyone wanted to know lmao

Hello and welcome

You seem a jolly person! Hehehe

Sounds like you have a good background so far

A golden hamster is a common name for the syrian hamster but they come in many wonderful colours!!

Most people would reccommend Harry Hamster food as the best. Not all hammies like balls so when you get yours be prepared. You can give "floor time" and make your room hammy proof or mine climb the stairs ^_^

Check out the hamster wiki, its full of all the basics

Cages- depending if you prefer wire, tank or plastic- check out the cage review section.

I have 3 in savic cambridge and 1 in zoozone 2

Im 23, live with my bf and have 4 hams and 2 ratties,

enjoy HC! xxxx

Hi and welcome!

I'm a relative newbie myself, I found this forum very helpful when I first got my Syrian hammy Honey, everyone is really friendly and usually you can find someone who will have the answer to your question.

I'm 29 and live with my BF in Lancashire.

Welcome Glad helenp directed you here, certainly in the right place!

Some syrians really enjoy balls and they can get lots of exercise from it, personally i prefer free roaming as i can interact with the hamsters better and its more stimulating for them.
But obviously with a new hamster, balltime and playpens(or the bathtub or a big box) is a good way to start. Or if you don't have a room safe enough for floortime.

My syrians cage is 80cm x 49cm which is a brilliant size

TeheHE! Yeah i'm fairly jolly hehe!

It's all Helenp's fault, I blame her entierly. My hubby will too! I like to research into things before I dive in when it envolves other lives. When it's just my own I like to jump in the deep end

Okay so: Harry hamster food, and be prepared for said hammy to stare out of the ball like it's confused *nods and takes notes* x

Helen suggested the ummm......oh see now I can't remmeber what it's called, it's like the same size as piggy heaven metro(?) but slightly less expensive? oh i'm sure she'll tell me later!

I'm torn between ratties and hammies? Which would you pick? That's going to be a hard question I bet xox

First posts have to be monitored before showing i think
I've never had ratties, but of course it'd be hamsters.
Amethyst_ice and a few others should be able to give a good answer as they have both

rolls eyes: Well ofcourse they all got posted, it would be just my luck xox

I'm in half minds about Ratties or hammies. I'd like to have both and may work my way up to it. Every time my hubby and I have an argument he gives in to another species, it's quiet amusing.
