Default New Grandma

Hello everyone,

I am new to hamster keeping so I will have a lot of questions. My ten-year-old daughter will be registering to join this forum as well. I am "grandma" to a relatively young Syrian hamster we acquired through a rescue organization three months ago. Her name is Poppy. Poppy's mom was about to be euthanized and her litter of 14 pups (I think that's what baby hamsters are called) were going to be fed to snakes. Poppy's dad was also scheduled to be euthanized.

A rescue organization got involved so there was a happy ending. Poppy's dad was adopted. Poppy's mom and her litter were cared for by a wonderful lady. When the babies were old enough, they all found homes (including ours). Poppy's mom was adopted too.

Poppy is in a fairly small starter cage so I will be writing soon to ask questions about cages. We definitely need to upgrade to a larger one.

Welcome to the forum and great to hear of your wonderful adoption. It is so great that those little ones all got a second chance. You did right to start the baby in a smaller cage as this is ideal for access and helps taming. When she is tame you can move her to a bigger one. Looking forward to meeting her and hearing all about her

I'm a sucker for happy endings as well heh. Welcome to the community I look forward to meeting your daughter as well! Please ask any questions you might have, no matter how simple they might seem.

Thanks, souffle! I had no idea I was starting out the right way with a smaller cage. I'll admit I didn't methodically plan this, but I'm glad to hear that it's a good way to start. It must be working because Poppy is getting very tame.

Thanks. I am so glad the rescue organization stepped in and saved all those lives!

Yes, it's like a fairy tale ending...and they lived happily ever after!

My daughter and I are looking forward to meeting all of you and we appreciate the warm welcome!
