Re: Should I get a hamster?
The best bedding to use for the cage floor would be megazorb which is easily bought in bulk and for the hamster to sleep on, just use unscented toilet roll (shredded).
Fluffy bedding can cause limbs to be caught, cutting off circulation - leading to amputation, or it can be digested, damaging their intestines. It shouldn't be on the shelves at all really, in my opinion.

Re: Should I get a hamster?
Make sure the wheel is big enough, if it's too small the hamster runs all squished up which puts pressure on their backs. My syrian has an 11 inch diameter wheel but I think 8 inch one is ok too. Wodent wheels or silent spinners are nice and quiet when they are in use.

Yeah 8" or bigger is perfectly fine - i have the junior wodent wheel, i think its really good, it can get a bit squeaky the odd time - but thats only when theres sawdust inbetween the washers? i think

Re: Should I get a hamster?
be prepared to be ordered around and have your life taken over as if they are a child
They will beg for playtime, often at the most inconvenient times!
(i currently have porridge climbing up my top as i type )
What species are you thinking of getting?

Re: Should I get a hamster?
Fluffy bedding isn't digestible and can cause great problems if ingested, it can also get caught 'round their limbs. Shred cheap loo roll like tescos own would suffice, be careful with newspaper though as some ink can be harmful
Edit: Silly browser not showing all the posts
Also: Stuff like toilet rolls and egg boxes are your friends, pop them in the microwave for 30 seconds (to kill bacteria) ad suddenly you have a very entertaining toy!

Re: Should I get a hamster?
Hi everyone,
More news, my landlord has oked me getting a hamster as long as it is ok with my housemates which i'm hoping it will be. So I was thinking about getting the habbitrail ovo loft cage, is this supposed to be good? Also what hamster carriers are good as he/she will have to be in it for a whille (3 hours). Im thinking that the habbitrail carrier will be too small for this. What do you all think?

Re: Should I get a hamster?
I have seen the DIY bin cages and they look really good but I dont have any tools and am not very handy with that side of things. I might build one in the summer when I move back home becuase I could get my dad to help. Which cages would you suggest that are big enough?

Re: Should I get a hamster?
Thats good
Personally i would avoid habitrail, many other will agree with me.
The loft is the best of the habitrail cages, i woul still have more attachments aswell as the loft, even better a bin cage.
If you look through our cage review section the forum you will find lots of great cages. You will probably find a syrian will outgrow the habitrail, aswell as the difficulty to clean, acess for taming (they will hide in the tubes). It will also get very stuffy and hot in there during the summer.
I love the ferplast aladino, guinea pig carrier. I use it for Treo when i take him to shows and hes in there for about 8 hours. You could make a bin carrier if you wished using a storage box with holes drilled for ventelation.
Most hamsters will sleep whilst in carriers, you don't want them thrashed around during car journeys if you use a carrier that is too big either. So massive space isn't vital.
