Thanks. Within the last year or two we considered getting a hamster from a retailer in Dunstable....but it didn't feel right. The person in charge of the pet area at that time wouldn't even pick up a hamster to show us.....I felt so sorry for the hammy being stuck in it's cage

I'm so pleased i've come accross this site and now also MAH.....I'm amazed at the knowledge and hard work that goes into breeding.

I am thinking about getting a large plastic furlplast type cage, do you think that's ok?? Thought it would keep all the bedding in, but I know some hamsters love to climb the bars.....I don't want to spoil the hamster's fun

You'll find most the members on here are on mah as well mah is a little more breeder orientated i think, there is more discussions about breeder litters. I post on hc more..purely to keep track!

Ive learnt soo much since joining...i feel so guilty that my hams were in small cages (well..i thought they were big) and on fluffy bedding. sigh. but at least i have made positive changes

cages..we have a great cage review section. People are always asking..what cage is best. of course it differs to the space you have, budget and hammy character.

personally i have the savic cambridge for 2 (and soon to be 3 on the weekend when a fellow hc member is giving me her old one as a christmas pressie ^_^ ) and i am swapping my other ham into a zoozone2 tomorrow.

He was a bar biter so i made him a bin cage..but he still chews and monkey bars and gave himself concussion a few weeks ago so i made the decision to move him to an all plastic cage. as most plastic cages are small i went for the popular (rabbit/guinea pig cage) zoozone2. Has more floor space

furplast is a make. Not sure which one you mean (im more a wire cage person).
Popular plastic cages are-

Duna multy
Zoozone2
Gabber Rex

all can be found in the cage review section.

We have a bargain cage thread under housing which is mainly ebay finds but thats where all my cages have come for..one was £2!

ps.i see you are a fellow insomniac lol which is fine as we have many international members!

Thanks Amethyst Ice. I've been having a good look at the reviews.

It's the Ferplast Duna Multy I'm thinking of getting.

I don't want to have to add the wire meshing to the bars at the top, like you need to do with the Zoozone2 and maxi multi or drill a hole for a water bottle.

Zoozone1 and Gabber Lux is too small for a Syrian.

That leaves the Gabber Rex, otherwise known as Montagna Criceto Rex....Very similar to the DMulty.
I quite like the plastic shelving in the Rex but sounds like it's discontinued.....and I prefer the way the Multi opens out at the top rather than it having to be slid out sideways.

(Have I missed off any other similar style cages that I should look at?)

So the Multy it is, unless something comes along to change my mind that is! Narrow wires at the top so no meshing needed. I believe this has a hole already for the drinks bottle, and am aware that I will probably need to create a mound for the hammy to stand on to reach the spout.
Will I have to get a certain bottle type to fit? Does anyone know if you can purchase a shelf that fits into the Duna Multy similar to what the Rex has? Which is better....8'' Woodent Wheel or a silent Spinner or ??

Bedding and nesting materials and toys to choose too! Oh so many decisions....

Many years ago I had a hamster who would love climbing the bars, but would also pee through them.... I've not read anything about that on here. Does anyone know why he might have done it?
That, along with the shavings getting thrown out the cage and bar chewing puts me off off the wire cages......but I still feel a bit bad about depriving the hammy of wall climbing

xxxThanks for all guidance xxx

I have a multy for my dwarf and it's got a lot of room for running around in which is nice..
A normal water bottle fits, I have mine attached with two sucker things (they came with a duna mini I bought)to the outside, I have a little step for my dwarf as it's pretty deep, but it'd be a fine height for a syrian

I don't know about the shelf...there are a lot of raised platforms around, and I think a mini obstacle course...with tubes and tunnels would be just as fun for them, I used to have mine in a mini duna and she loved building nests under the level in that, if you do find a level for the multy, link me
I'll try and find one

You may not even have a hamster who would climb, some don't...I don't know if it's different for dwarfs or not, but I've had one digger and one runner And my old hamster used to climb to the top of her cage and drop...put me of wired cages..I'd worry too much..

And the open top makes it so easy to tame (although you also have to be careful as they may think you're a predator)

I feel better about not having bars on the cage for the hamster to climb hearing that, thanks KatieP.
If you use the suckers from a mini, I wonder what ppl without those are supposed to use to hold the bottle in place. I think I've seen a pic somewhere that someone used selotape and a cabletie somehow.

This is one option,
Ferplast Sippy Water Drinking Bottle Small Pet | Net Pet Shop

It comes with suckers, so that solves the attaching problem, I personally didn't like it because I worried whether my hamster was getting water out of it, but if that's what it's used to, it should be fine (we used it for a night in a spare cage) also, with a syrian I'd worry less as they're stronger/bigger

This is another option, would probably work out cheaper, get an ordinary bottle and these Flat-Bac Water Bottle Suction Cup Attatchment (pack of 2)-Hyperdrug
and use string or something to hold the waterbottle in. They're available from more than this shop, just google it and find out, it works out best if you order all your extras from one place, and I didn't know where you'd be ordering from ((the sippy is available from elsewhere too)

I once saw somebody refer to two little holes in the duna multy, whihch you're meant to be able to thread a wire through, but mine doesn't have any o.o; so..I don't know what that's about >.<

Hope this helps

You can dangle the bottle from the roof and this works fine. Elastic band it then attach with a wire tie. We drill out a hole in the side of ours and the two holes to thread some round elastic through them to hold it in place. We also have a dwarf bottle attached using self adhesive velcro

I've just found the two holes in the roof you could indeed hang one from there (the reason I've never contemplated hanging a bottle is because I thought it'd be from the wired bit at the top, and would therefore move whenever you open it :S
But..now I've found these two holes.. >.< makes more sense
