Default Introducing little Minx

Hi everyone,

Well as some of you might have seen last night...I now have a new little addition .

As I said in my previous thread - "Getting Empty Nest Syndrome"...I had an emergency phone call from a friend of mine last night saying that her little girl's two 10 week dwarf hamsters have already started squabbling after she bought them a week ago for her daughter's birthday...so, knowing that I had an empty tank ready and waiting to go she asked if I would like one for myself...so I said yes as the little ones are quite young still. I did warn my friend not to get two hamsters due to this very reason - so I think she's learnt her lesson from this lol.

Her daughter had named them Minnie and Minx from the Beano Comics...and I am now the very proud owner of little Minx ! I have just got her settled down into her new home. I double checked and I am 99% sure that Minx is female (as she had very tiny little nipples).

Minx is a lovely light grey colour with a darker grey stripe down her back and white underneath. She's already a confident little character and is currently having a little wash and brush up after eating some of her food.

I will let her continue to get settled over the next couple of weeks and will hopefully remember how to post photos on here again of her.

Will update little Minx's thread soon .

Well I am hoping this works as I haven't used my Photobucket Account for years lol.

I know the pics might look like she's in a small tank, but it is bigger than it looks .

Here is my new little addition Minx - there is a tissue in there with my scent on it so she can start to know me without me disturbing her

I do hope these work

Yes it worked. She's a lovely colour and so cute! Lucky girl, now she can live a happy and peaceful hamster life.

Thanks Ria, I am definitely looking forward to getting to know Minx. I haven't seen her since she went into her house last night (shortly after I took the second photo), but I am leaving her be and just topping up her food/water etc. and gently talking to her through her tank.

I love Minx's colouring and I think out of both Minnie and Minx, Minx seems to have the slightly more confident character. Minnie was light brown with a darker brown line down her back and red eyes and does seem to have bonded better with my friend's daughter.

Had a phone call earlier today from her saying that Minnie has started to calm down herself since the squabble yesterday, so definitely think we did the right thing by separating them both. I have also given her details of Hamster Central as it's helped me loads over the years I have owned hamsters and she said she'd think about joining.

Glad it seems to have settled down now though .

I've not heard or seen a peep from Minx yet, but as it's only lunchtime and I've had her less than 24 hours, I'm not surprised lol.

There's no doubt in my mind that you did the right thing by separating them. Chances are that you may even have saved their lives because squabbles can turn into fights and hamsters fight to the death. It's just not worth taking the risk.
A happy ending for everyone.

I find that when i get a new hamster that at first they're all excited and exploring but once they've realized that it really is all theirs they relax and enjoy burrowing or getting cozy in their houses until they decide to check out this new human in their lives.

Well, Minx was up and about a little last night
I had just switched off my bedroom light and was reading my Kindle in the dark (only way I can get to sleep at night) when I heard a little scuffling sound, so I put on my little lamp and she paused whilst she was on her wheel.

I was glad of this as I wasn't sure if I had put her house close enough to her shelf, which has the wheel and water bottle stand on it, so I had put a couple of treats up on the shelf and her wheel and it really pleased me to see her up and about.

I didn't move from the bed as I didn't want to startle her too much, but after she paused on the wheel, she did quickly jumped off the shelf, onto her house, climbed down to the base of the tank and dived into her house, but I gently apologised for startling her and then turned off the light again (it's not very bright and it faces the wall so it's not bright for me).

So I am glad that she's was a little more confident last night and found her wheel etc.

Like with Bonnie, she's small and fast, but I'm hoping she will be able to start trusting me in the near future.

Didn't see Minx last night as was so tired I crashed out as soon as my head hit the pillow, but I did leave out a few mealworms for her (dried this time round, but will try some live ones when she's getting to know me) and they were gone this morning, so I know she's had them.

I'm not doing much tomorrow, as got unexpected day off as work are doing a stocktake and there's going to be several people there already, so not worth me going in, so will maybe spend a bit more time tomorrow evening (as don't have to go to bed too early tomorrow), so hopefully Minx can start to get to know me a little.

Default Little Minx's Thread

Well Minx has completely blown me away, yesterday and surprisingly...this morning!

I got home from work last night, not expecting Minx to be up and about yet...but she was up and chewing the roof of her disposable house! I expected her to dash into it as soon as she saw me, but she just watched me and I took a chance. I picked up a couple of sunflower seeds and as quietly as I could, I opened her tank.

Minx didn't move or flinch, so, whilst quietly talking to her I held out a sunflower seed to her and after a minute, she gently stretched up and took it and then started to eat in right in front of me as bold as brass lol. She did it again with the second one and pouched that one for later. I didn't want to push her any further and said thank you to her and closed her door. She then headed for her terracotta house and that was the last I saw of her last night.

I woke up this morning and Minx was back out and exploring all over...so I did the same as I did last night and this time she came over to me and started smelling my fingers and took a dried mealworm from me and then headed back into her house again.

So very pleased with how well Minx is settling into her home. By the looks of things Minx is going to tame quicker than Bonnie did, bless her. Still going to take it slowly with Minx though as I don't want to ruin the bond she is getting already.

Mweekie xx

P.S - I've changed thread name to Little Minx's Thread - as going to keep this as her own thread

Hello everyone,

Well Little Minx has been with me for just over a week now and is definitely showing more of her character. She does remind me of Bonnie a little as she is quite happy being out in the open, especially when food is around lol. She clears her bowl every night and is sometimes up and about in the morning as well - which is why it is fairly light in my room at the moment. She's not even bothered by Winnie (my cat), who will sit and watch her stuffing her pouches lol.

It's so nice to have my empty tank filled with a little one to love again. In a strange sort of way, I am kind of glad my friend got 2 hamsters, as otherwise I would never of gotten Minx and she is definitely suited to being on her own.

She's settled so well now - she's definitely food motivated and had her first pea from my Mum the other night and very gently took it from my Mum's hand with no problems without being nervous by a new person.

I am hoping to start trying to see if Minx will let me handle her probably next week, during the evening when she's just about to get her dinner (well...breakfast I suppose lol).

Enjoy the photos!
