Maximus
After a beautiful year and four months with Mocha I felt ready to take in another hamster. It wasn't particularly on my mind the day I browsed around in ads, but stumbled upon one for a 4 week old dwarf hamster boy. I didn't have a habitat ready yet so I thought someone would scoop him up quickly. I put a favorite heart on him, just to keep an eye anyway. While I was finishing building the habitat I intended for the next little one, his ad was closed and I assumed he was adopted. When I was finished and ready to adopt one in need from a rescue nearby, almost the same hour as I was preparing an email to the facilitators, the ad popped up again, only now he was listed as a 6 week old with the same picture. I took this as a super sign and I made contact to see if he could be my match.
Yesterday I finally brought this beautiful little russian dwarf hybrid home, and I couldn't be happier. His name is Maximus. All the way home he was burrowing and poking his little snout out from various holes. He was quite spooked when offered to come out of it to get into his habitat, but with some patience and encouragement he strolled right out of the carrier and onto his house, further exploring deeper into the creases and tunnels, finding his feet and some confidence.
He is housed in an ikea detolf. I am sort of happy with the set-up, but will probably reserve a section for sand next time I make changes. For now he's installing himself, all burrowed down and exploring at night. We'll see what comes next. Welcome home, Maximus. ♡

Re: Maximus
Oh! It always makes me so happy to hear of another little hamster from the small ads move into a fabulous forever home!
Thank you for sharing. You made my day and Welcome Maximus!
Your set up is fantastic and very inspiring. Did you make the raised lid yourself? That's a silly question really because i know that you have the skills to make a hamster wheel. I've always envied you for that, lol.

Happy to share! (:
Thanks a lot, I do enjoy my diy-things.
I did make the lid. It was inspired by others from pinterest and youtube and I'm really happy with how it turned out. It is basically two rounded off side pieces with four lines across to form a frame. Simple hinges on the back and the mesh stapled to the frame. A layer of paint for some finish. I am well happy with anything that can inspire!

Re: Maximus
May i suggest that you add your detolf in the thread "Let's see your cages" in the Forum under Housing? If you would like to of course.
Did you, by any chance, draw the cute hamster in your avatar as well?

I can absolutely do that.
Oh, I didn't. But it is adorable so I couldn't resist. (:

Re: Maximus
So, Maximus is... extremely surprising.
The first two nights I did not see him at all. He took to one of the hideouts and burrowed in well. I did see signs of him foraging and finding food, and some things were slightly shifted. I put some bedding on his wheel to make sure I would know when he found it, and both nights it was gone. Last night I heard him scratch around and dig and was well satisfied knowing he was moving around and exploring when I wasn't around.
This evening I was not expecting to see him either, but behold, as I sneak in he's right out, perking his ears and sniffing in the air. I was super excited to see him but sat quiet, only whispering to him, and he stayed and observed for a good 10 minutes before starting to groom himself. After that it was full on exploring, getting on his wheel, more grooming, racing through tunnels. I am amazed of his confidence and I completely adore his personality that is already so strongly shown.
I can't wait to get to know him further. (:

Re: Maximus
That's so great that you got to see him do all of that.

Re: Maximus
And on the fourth day, he nips. I had a really good time with Maximus tonight. He went for my fingertip instead of the seed, but the look right afterwards is pure 'what will you do now...' and it made me laugh. I feel like we're making great and speedy progress. He's definitely getting the hang of the wheel, but it bugs me that it is a bit wonky. I'll be sorting that out soon.
Did anyone else have a wonky Karlie Wonderland wheel?

Re: Maximus
I have 3 wooden Trixie wheels, which are similar to the Karlie Wonderland wheel, and 2 of them are wonky like that. It annoys me too but doesn't seem to affect the function.
What great photos and Maximus looks adorable!

I see. It is true it works well still, just one of those small things. Haha
It's kind of an odd 'wonk' though. When or if I find a fix for it I will share it. (:
Thank you!
