Red face I scared my new dwarf

Hi everyone!

I brought back a 9 week old dwarf hamster home last week. His name is Stormi and he's a cutie. I've barely seen him since, as he was getting adjusted to his new set up. However this morning he was out. He's lovely, not shy, so me and my kids offered treats and watched him go by. I was arranging a flax spray and stupidly decided to stroke him on the back. He freaked out so I took my hand away, which made a banging noise against the cage's bars, which scared him more. He ran away, jumped on his wheel, gave it a few turns, then decided to go back to his little burrow. I'm feeling a bit mortified that I scared him out so soon when everything was going so well.
What should I do now? Leave him alone entirely for a couple of days? Spend time near his cage just talking? Any advice and reassurance, or anecdotes of hamsters not resenting our clumsiness would be much appreciated

Dodo, my advice is don't worry so much - happens to most of us at some point.
My robo Comet still zooms off scared every now and then and I have done nothing different to cause it.
Just keep talking to Stormi and offering treats and see how it goes.

Congratulations to new dwarfie Stormi.

Relax. Hamsters quickly forget and get used to us noisy humans and their household noises. They are naturally nosy and Stormi will soon come out again to check out his new family and surroundings.

Hamsters do get spooked easily and sometimes for no obvious reason. They dive down the nearest hole and i'm left wondering what this was all about.

A good time to stroke a new hamster is when they're busy eating.

thank you both for your kind messages! hopefully he'll get over it soon. He seems like a quite confident hammie so it will probably be allright but I have a hard time letting go of the guile

We have minor mishaps all the time because we have so many hamsters but they are very forgiving. They don't bear grudges and have better things on their minds (foraging for food and edible treats) than to worry about the occasional banging noise of a human hand. I have dropped cage doors by accident causing a loud bang a few times, spilt water on one of my dwarfs coconut while she was in it because i missed her bowl etc. Yesterday morning she nibbled my OH's foot trying to tell him that she wanted back in her cage making him jump and nearly got a coffee shower.

Those poor hamsters are living with two elderly, naturally clumsy humans who forever mislay their glasses.

Yours is doing too bad at all.

I'd just leave him be for a little while, it doesn't have to be for too long; even if it's just a few days, seeing that you did definitely scare him.

I saw him yesterday evening, out and about and so active. I gave him a few treats and manage not to terrify him. Dwarves are so tiny and cute!
