Stone problem
Hi i was wondering where you all keep your stone in the cage? A lot of people recommended putting it under the water bottle but my girl loves taking small naps under it and i really dont wanna ruin it for her by putting a stone under, thanks!

Hi and welcome to HC!
What kind of stone are you talking about and for what purpose?
Generally, anything heavy needs to go somewhere the hamster can't burrow underneath it.

Re: Stone problem
I’ve seen a lot of people putting stones in the cage often under the water bottle in the mistaken opinion that it will help keep nails trim, unless it’s a very rough stone it won’t do anything at all & if it is a rough stone may be uncomfortable for a hamster, also I think it’s dangerous to have something heavy like a stone which could move & injure a ham.
If you want things to help keep nails trim then a sand bath, rough textures like bendy bridges & cork will help a little, you can use granite slabs or tiles but these must be secure, on top of a house for example.

Re: Stone problem
I use stones in my cages. I either place them in the sand baths, in front of the entrance to their houses or in front of their wheels, somewhere where they will go over them often. I just make sure it is safe and not going to move and injure my hamsters. Not too big and not too small, so depends on hamster species.

i would’ve put a stone in her sand bath but she really likes jumping from her bedding to the sand (it’s not high just barely half her size) and rolling like a madman in it (i first thought it was cus of stress but found out it was just her way of cleaning herself lol)

Ah, i see. i wanted it to keep er nails trim so i wouldn’t have to trim her nails myself (i’m dreading the day) i don’t really want the vets to do it as i’ve been trying to keep myself inside as much as possible cus of covid lol. i’ll try to find that sand, my country doesn’t really give us pet owners much of an option when it comes to buying for our pets (we don’t even have whimzees here!!) thank you so much for the reply
