Clarissa has a soft lump under her chin which doesn't seem to bother her but that's not the point. Lumps need to be investigated so i took her to the vet.
Surprisingly, she wasn't half as hostile towards the vet than normally sweet natured Betsy was.

The vet took a sample of the fluid from inside the lump which had some blood in it, something she didn't expect to be analyzed in the onsite lab. I'll get the result on Monday.
It could be anything from a cyst to an abcess, a tumor to a problem with the lymphatic system or a haematoma.
Hopefully it is something treatable and should it require surgery, i would definitely go for it because Clarissa is only 8 months old and otherwise fit.

Clarissa climbed onto her open cage door this morning then stopped, turned around and went back into her cage!
Normally she'd climb onto my hand keen to come out.

I thought someone that small would have a very short memory span but maybe i'm mistaken. She is an intelligent hamster and i wished i could explain to her that going to the vet and being attacked by a needle could possibly have saved her life.

I hope that the lump is benign and is one that can be resolved without the treatment being too invasive. It never ceases to amaze me how clever hams actually are and what they remember. Fingers crossed she comes out for a cuddle and some out of cage time soon x

Sorry to hear about this with little Clarissa. She is such a character. Fingers crossed for her and her results.

Clarissa is booked in for surgery on the 20th to have the lump removed.
The first lab result pointed towards lymphatic cancer going by the type of cells the vet found.
I should have opted for surgery then but paid £124 for a more comprehensive lab result which didn't really help because it didn't identify the nature of the lump.
Abcess, cyst etc was ruled out when the vet withdrew some fluid.
It has grown in the last few weeks, its in the wrong position to be a mammary tumor but the vet can get her finger underneath it so it should be fairly straightforward to remove.
I opted out of the biopsy option which would be another £100 on top of the £260 surgery fee because it wouldn't change the outcome to know what it is. Yes, it would give a prognosis but would it benefit to know?
I don't think so. If its confirmed cancer i'd be looking at poor Clarissa, how long have you got every day.
By not knowing i can live in hope and enjoy every day with her without a dark cloud hovering above.

Surgery may not be a cure but it may bring the crazy little acrobat back for a while. I want to give her the chance to be herself again.
This thing is really cramping her style. She can't monkeybar, it gets in the way when she cleans her nether regions making her fall off from wherever she happens to sit and she can't lay flat on her curved roof to sleep. It slowed her down and she can't take off like a wind up toy when put on the floor but she's otherwise well in herself, eating, drinking and asking for out of cage time.

Aw, poor little lass. I hope the surgery works for her and gives her her old self back. It's so hard to see our furry friends sick.

Clarissa is in for her surgery now. I have faith in the vet operating but the lump is large (it grew so fast) and it is a high risk procedure. I'm not a nervous person by nature but i'm feeling very nervous and uneasy at the moment. I think Clarissa could sense that something was up because she kept looking at me and didn't go to sleep in the transport box like she normally does.
