Happy birthday Bramble, I saw the video on YouTube first and I nearly said something about the bridge. so glad you noticed too. I couldn't remember whose YouTube that was, but then I came on here and saw it was you It was funny when she knocked it off the house, it was like where did that go, and then when she is stood on it but still trying to move it - bless her, very cute.

She's actually quite intelligent in some ways but not so much in others.

The bendy bridge had really uneven sticks at one end which caused the gaps, but the opposite end was fine so I just turned it round. I've found it can be an issue with some of the cheaper bendy bridges. I bought some from Pet Planet the other day that were so bad I can't use them even under supervision. I'm going to cut the wire and just use the sticks as chews.

I push substrate into the gaps, Carefresh is good for that and hold it in place with a dot of Elmer's school glue if needed.

Bramble went to the vet today. She has a lump on her chest, near her left arm. I noticed it last week but it hasn't grown at all since then. The vet wasn't exactly sure what it was but is quite sure it isn't an abscess because it's not red or hot, it hasn't grown and it doesn't seem to bother her. It's a firm lump, probably not fluid filled. It's probably a bit smaller than a pea. She's still hamstering along as normal so he recommended a watch and wait approach. He did say it could be a tumour.

She also has a scratch under her left ear. The vet checked it and the ear itself and doesn't think there's any infection so I'm going to check her cage thoroughly tomorrow to see how it could have happened.

Lumps and bumps are so common in dwarf hamsters and makes one wonder where they come from.

As long as it doesn't bother Bramble and not causing any discomfort i'd leave it alone too.

Edwina has had a swelling for a while now and vet advised to observe as well and i'm not sure about Clarissa's chest looking different or not. Tried to examine her today but she's a feisty little thing and wriggled like crazy.

How old is Bramble now?

She's about 14 months old now. The vet mentioned surgery as a possibility but I don't see the point if it isn't growing or causing her problems (and the vet agreed with that too).

Yes, lumps do seem to be all too common in hamsters unfortunately.

I haven't updated this thread in ages!

Bramble seems to be aging in reverse these days. The lump she developed overnight in May spontaneously disappeared a month or two ago.

She had some trouble with a chronic sore near her ear for a little while. She had to be treated with Metacam and topical Ivermectin (in case it was ear mites) a couple of times before it resolved and it hasn't come back for several months.

She has a cataract in one eye and sometimes gets styes on her eyelid. They don't seem to bother her and usually go away on their own but sometimes if they persist she gets a course of antibiotics. Otherwise she seems in great condition. She looks younger and has more energy than she did 6 months ago. She'll be 2 in March.

I adopted another Russian dwarf a few months ago, called Athena. She's 15 months old now and has the typical lumps and bumps that dwarf hamsters of that age often get but she's doing ok. I got her from an owner who was allergic to her and she was in a much too small cage with a 4 inch wheel. She was obese and extremely cage aggressive (would get agitated if you even stood near the cage, let alone put your hand in). The cage aggression instantly improved by about 90% once she was moved to a Hamster Heaven with a wheel she could fit in and the weight dropped off quickly (see the before and after photos). She still can't be picked up in her cage, like many dwarf hamsters, but she's happy to walk into a tube and outside the cage I can handle her fine.

What a difference in Athena in the second photo. She looks so much healthier and she must be so happy living with you.

Lovely photo of Bramble eating nuts.
