Re: Edwina
What gorgeous colouring. Edwina's a little star and looks so innocent.

Re: Edwina
Edwina's been living here for over a week and she's been in the playpen and been handled by me. She likes to climb up to my shoulder, then up the back of the futon and along the back rest but that's when i cup my hands around her because i don't want her to fall.
In the playpen she walks on the sand but doesn't roll in it like her neighbour Percy does (they have their own, portable sandpits). It's the long, bendy bridge she likes. First time it took her three attempts to climb it but she was determined to succeed and did.
I've changed her set up today and moved the sand from the middle to the right (bought another Ferplast guinea pig house to support it leaving the front panel out) and put her wheel in it. The long, bendy bridge i had used as a fence around the sandpit is now a bridge for her to walk over. The subterranean Ferplast house on the left where she sleeps i have not touched because she's moved in. The coconut and cork is in a different place but on the same side and i left one side clear because she likes to run through cardboard tubes.
The first photo is the original set up and the other two the adjusted one. Edwina is in her house so haven't observed her response as yet.
Feedback of you knowledgable people here would be most welcome.

Re: Edwina
What a lovely setup! I'm sure Edwina is loving it.
Lots of interesting and stimulating things for a hamster to do in there.

Re: Edwina
Looks like Edwina likes her new set up! She's inspected it all, walked across the long bridge and dug around in the sand (same sand, different location so why does it appeal all of a sudden?). She was heading back to her bed and was halfway in the bendy bridge porch when she suddenly stopped and looked over to the window. She came over and walked through the tube outside her habitat and then went to bed. Almost like she had to check one more thing before she went to her underground den.
Got a nice photo of her too.

Re: Edwina
So much depends on a hamster's personality i think. Right from the beginning, Edwina didn't display the typical shy, new hamster behaviour. She runs over hands like she runs over a bridge, makes no difference to her. When i take her out of her cage she doesn't try and hide but with ears up runs and climbs all over me. Not that she seeks out my company, i'm under no illusion to be any more than a climbing frame to her. It's nice to have a hamster with this innocence about her, who is not afraid of humans. I don't know where she was born and bred but it looks like she's one of the lucky pet shop hamsters who had a good start in life and wasn't in the pet shop for long.
Here she is munching on her cucumber before she went off tunneling.

Re: Edwina
Edwina's home has a feature wall. I don't like a bin cage to look like a plastic box so have put up mats on two sides but there wasn't enough space between wheel and sandpit on the right side. The little madam kept knocking her silent spinner wheel over (the boys never did) so i got her a new one with a solid base. Not sure how a hamster that small managed it but that's hamsters for you.
Anyway, i stuck a sheet of patterned paper (£1.30 at Hobbycraft) on the outside of the bin. It has a pattern on both sides. Totally for my benefit, i know but it also blocks the light from a window. Haven't seen Edwina yet today but i know that she loves her new wheel. Still looking for a suitable sand bath container to fit as well as the plastic base of a fish steamer she currently uses. May have to buy a new steamer.

Re: Edwina
Update on Edwina:
Edwina has turned out to be a delightful little hamster. She likes running around and climbing on the futon. Presently she's in the playpen box and sussed out how to use the flying saucer. She fell off a couple of times which didn't put her off but is now running really fast.
