Is my new hamster a hybrid?
Hello hamster friends!
I've just bought a new hamster called Betty. The woman at the pet shop said she's quite big because she's 7 months old and they've been struggling to sell her.
At first glance she looks black but if you look closely, she has little 'tufts' of white hair at the back of her ears and on her bum. When I brush her coat she's has white fur underneath.
The woman at the pet shop said 'hamsters weren't her thing', the other workers clean them out and handle them so she couldn't tell me much about Betty.
From the pictures, would you say she's a long hair/short hair hybrid? I've had short haired Syrians before and Betty's coat appears very different. Or could it be she's gone white from the stress of being kept in a pet shop for so long?
Any help would be appreciated
Many thanks
Betty's Mum 🐹❤️

Re: Is my new hamster a hybrid?
She is a long haired black hamster. Females are sort of tufty all over and the fur behind the ears is always longer. Because it is longer the thinness of the fur makes it appear grey. She is very pretty. Blacks will normally brown as they age to a sort of chestnut colour and this is normal.
You don't get Hybrid syrians. That only happens with Campbells dwarf and Winter whites.
The long hair gene is recessive in syrians but carriers can show a slightly longer coat behind the ears however your little one is a full long coat.

Thank you Souffle!
How exciting! I've never owned a long haired before.
Thank you for your help and for saying she looks pretty, everyone in my family says she looks like a fat rat so it's nice to hear that I'm not the only person that think's she's cute 😊🙏

Awww she's lovely. I can't imagine why they were struggling to sell her, what a shame she was in the pet shop for so long. I'm pleased she's found a home with you and welcome to HC

She's absolutely adorable! I love just how fluffy longhaired hams are. Nothing wrong with fat rats though

Re: Is my new hamster a hybrid?
Thanks ladies! ☺️❤️
... one last question, do hamsters snore? This morning I heard her making a very strange noise in her bed, it was like a very soft 'a chooo' 'a choo'. I thought it was coming from outside at first but then I realised the noise was coming from her coconut! (She sleeps in an empty coconut)
My husband says she's snoring. I'm not so sure

Re: Is my new hamster a hybrid?
They don't snore but they can make a sort of chirping grating noise in their sleep sometimes. It may be because it is so warm and she is getting a bit hot in there. Keep her shaded and in a cool room and chill a plate in the fridge and pop that in her cage to give her a cool area to lie on.
Check her for wheezy or clicky breathing though as they can get human colds and chest infections which are quite serious in hammies. I hope she is OK though.

Re: Is my new hamster a hybrid?
Betty is extremely cute! I love her wee fluffy tufts glad she has found a good home with you. Welcome to HC! Is the sound like cute sneezing? Fudge does this now and again like once or twice and then stops. It's sooo cute. He is in Fitch bedding so I don't think it's allergy related. And he never has runny eyes or any other symptoms.
