Flynt`s coat colour is very much like flint (grey!) he`s so cute! Those pet shops do make us cringe but if it means giving one of their hamsters a better life, then it`s worth it. x

Well I'm really not sure what my boy gets up to in his big new cage when I'm sleeping but he's slimmed down quite a lot! I hadn't weighed him for a while but was thinking he looked a fair bit smaller & he's gone down to 62g, considering he peaked at 85g that's a pretty big weight loss!
It has been gradual but the only change has been the cage, eating just the same as always & he seems to be maintaining that weight now so I'm really pleased, a much healthier little guy now!

Now all of my little ones have had a trip to the vet!

Flynt had to go & have his teeth clipped yesterday, poor little boy
I thought he was looking a bit skinny (for him) when I weighed him as usual on Sunday & was shocked to see he'd managed to lose 9g in a week!
Up until then he'd appeared to be eating normally, food was going from his bowl, chunks were missing from his veg & he was enjoying the odd bit of kitten kibble but suddenly he seemed to be really struggling to eat anything.
(His previous weight loss was so gradual & stayed stable for so long I don't think that was related to any problems.)
He's been on a diet of baby food, scrambled egg, porridge (with a bit of added ground flax seed & peanut butter which they love!) & soggy science selective & didn't lose any more weight before I got him to the vet yesterday.
Because of his age, he's not old but at 18 months he's not young either, the vet was reluctant to anaesthetise him to burr them so we settled for clipping which was quick & easy & a lot less stressful for him even though it does risk splitting or cracking the tooth.
It was horrible to see how quickly his condition deteriorated in just a couple of days, his coat lost it's lovely shine & his scent gland got blocked up, he looked a real mess poor guy, not that I really need reminding but it is a stark reminder of how quickly they can deteriorate & if they are unwell or having problems how they can hide it & monitoring their weight as well as doing regular general health checks is really important.
With him looking so bad it felt as though I must have been neglecting my little guy but the vet who is just as good with upset or anxious people as he is with stressed hams was very reassuring!
He also said there could possibly be other underlying problems with his mouth but we have to let him settle & wait & see how he does for a while now, if he doesn't go back to eating normally or loses weight again I'll have to take him back, fingers crossed!

I left Flynt quiet to settle down for a while then checked on him a couple of times yesterday & he was very reluctant to come out but seemed to be recovering from his stressful morning ok, he'd obviously been out & about overnight & some of his food & a little pile of seeds had gone which was a relief.
I tried him with some of his kitten kibble which he tried but failed to eat this morning but I guess his mouth is probably still a bit sore, he sat in my hand & had a good munch on some baby food & sprouted seeds then had a good dig around in his food bowl, he seemed to be pouching some food to take back to bed so hopefully he's managing some of his normal ham food now & will soon get back to normal.

Oh dear cypher! They are so small it doesn't take much for them to get in trouble. Sounds like you have a good vet which is a blessing. I'll be keeping your little guy in my thoughts and hope he recovers quickly. And you too! xx
