2 males or 2 females?
Hey guys So from the time I got my first hamster I've always had syrians. And for a while now I have been planning on getting a winter white (hybrid). Now I have done a lot of research on these hammys and want to try them out. I'm just not sure if I should be getting 1 or 2? Or get a pair of the same sex? Some people say it doesn't matter while others say they need to be in pairs. What do you guys think?
And yes I am aware that i need to get two of everything. I'm on it They would be living in one half of a divided detolf cage. would that be enough space?
And yes, I do have a spare cage just in case of a fight.

You seem to have thought of everything!
How big would their half of the detolf cage be?

Re: 2 males or 2 females?
Hybrids will live quite happily alone so you may be better off just getting the one. If you go for a pair, same sex, same litter, then half a detolf is about 80x40 I think & would probably be just about ok but maybe a bit small with 2 of everything in there!
It does seem that most pairs although not all end up needing to live separately so you'll need to be prepared for that just in case, what spare cage do you have?

Re: 2 males or 2 females?
I wouldn`t advise keeping a pair because 99% of them always start fighting. But if you are prepared to separate them and have a good sized spare cage, then you won`t have any surprises later on if they do fall out big time.
There is a reason pairs and groups fall out in captivity. They are forced to live in a scenario that isn`t natural. x

Alright thanks so much I think I'm going to go with just getting one then. The spare cage is a bin cage, larger than 360 square inches of floor space.

I think you're right about settling for 1 dwarf. 80×40 would be on the small side with doubles of everything
and dwarfs are fast and love their space.

Re: 2 males or 2 females?
I think 1 is probably the best decision, let us know when the new fluff arrives!
