I am very excited about getting a hamster. I have had a syrian, but been hamster-less for a few months now and feel the need for a companion!

I'd agree with racinghamster that the tubes could be a bit of a problem, not only for furry feet slipping & unable to get a grip but it can make taming harder if your ham tries to hide in the tubes & you have to struggle to get him or her out making it a bit stressful for both of you, just something to bear in mind & maybe prepare for as you have time before your new friend arrives home.

Also agree about not removing anything from the food, peas do have some natural sugars but that's fine as racinghamster said people also tend to forget that the combination of peas & corn can account for quite a bit of the protein content too.
Treats are the thing to be careful about but if in doubt just ask & someone will be able to help.

There's some really good advice for you here so I don't have anything useful to add (I've had Russian dwarves but years ago so I didn't really know what I was doing!) but I just wanted to say how sensible I think you've been with your research knowing that you might have had to separate a pair & what that would mean. Ideally, you want the 55cm long Trixie bendy bridge as the extra length makes it that bit longer than the shorter versions. It`s always best to check the length before purchasing as it`s easy to order the shorter versions by mistake.

Zooplus.co.uk sell the 55cm ones for under £3.00, but the site states that you must spend a minimum of £15 (without the £2.50 postage rate) before they will honour any order. I just placed an order for one yesterday while ordering their JR Farm dwarf mixes to make up the difference. So unless you plan to spend £15 or over, it might be worthwhile looking on other websites for these. I would type into google something like `Trixie 55cm log bridge` and see what comes up.

I suppose you would get away with cable-typing two shorter ones together to make a longer length though if you couldn`t find the 55cm long ones.

TheFluffyHammies. Take your time with your cage and once you are happy with the layout, it will be ready for any new hamster you put in there. The advice regarding the bendy ramps is a good idea and gives you an alternative if you find your new hammy has issues descending vertical tubes. The tubes in the Imac Fantasy are not `grippy` like the Critter Trail tubes, so possibly feel slippy to hamster with furry feet! x
