It could be that Poe feels he doesn't have his own secure little territory with them sharing & that's making him more afraid of you going to the cage, I don't have any personal experience of keeping pairs together but that's my first thought.
If you need to take him out & put him in the little carrier put some substrate from the cage in there so it smells more familiar & maybe if you could squeeze one in a bendy bridge or something, even a toilet roll so he doesn't feel so totally exposed.

Shall give it a go, thanks! I think the hamsters I've tamed before have all been quite bold to start with. I have a spare bin cage if he needs his own space anyhow.

I'd actually just back off and let him be for now. Check his gender with a jar and then stay back, let him see you interacting with and taming his brother and wait for his curiosity to get the better of him. Chances are his brother can be a really good influence here

Yeah I think the important thing is to be sure of his gender, though I'm probably just being a bit paranoid in the first place. Shall keep you posted how I get on!
