Default Hammys are very settled in at home! More pics of Gimli and Gizmo...

Since I got my little cuties on Saturday I've had difficulty getting hold of pictures as they've been quite shy and have been settling in.

Little Gizmo is handling herself very well with humans and jumps right onto your hand a has a little play with you, despite the incident when I bought her home and she jumped out of my hand, twice, on the floor. As far as we're aware she's a little girl but we may need a double check soon!

Little Gimli is a lot more shy when it comes to us, we've not been able to sex the little one yet as he/she is too shy to get onto our hands or even come up and have a sniff! I did have some success today as he/she walked over and sat on my hand as I lay it flat on the floor of the cage, but I didn't want to upset the little fellow by trying to figure out it's sex. Though that is something I need to do very soon!

Anyway, onto some pics (:
Gizmo is the little girl with white/grey fur and big black eyes
Gimli is the little unknow cutie with beige/creamy fur and little red eyes

Hope you enjoyed the pictures (: they're still not amazing due to the bad light, Gizmo comes out during the day a lot more than Gimli does.

Anyone got any tips for me in regards to Gimli? Getting her to trust me more and helping he/she know they'll be fine on my hand?

Of course there's also the worry that if Gimli is a boy that Gizmo could end up pregnant, how do I know the difference between fighting, play fighting and sex? They've been having abit of a squeak and a roll around together but in general they seem fine together, I was just wondering if anyone knew?

Thanks a lot in advance (:

Hello Hannah. Your hammies are lovely, lovely, lovely! The photos are great and I hope they get along together always . You can put a hammy in a glass jar and then check underneath to see what sex it is. If you are still not sure, take a photo and post it here and we may be able to help.

They both look lovely

Yes, please do sex Gimli asap, the last thing you want is pups for Gizmo. I'd just sex Gimli then be patient with him/her, I'm sure you'll both get there in the end

Play fighting tends to be slower, less frantic and quieter than real fighting to be honest (it can be faster at times but never really loud). In a real serious fight they'll be locked together in a single ball of fur while they try to rip chunks out of each other - and they'll likely be squeaking very, very loudly. In time you'll learn the different noises they make and what they mean, fighting squeaking is very different from slightly irritated squeaking, sleepy squeaking e.t.c. The squeaking when hams fight or have a bigger disagreement is really loud and kind of urgent, whereas I've never heard a ham squeak that loud outside of a relatively nasty disagreement. I've never had my own hams lock into that ball of fur and blood can be drawn before that stage but we've found the squeaks are usually a really helpful indicator of how serious or otherwise they're being at that moment.

Thank you for the comments (:

It's confirmed that Gizmo is a little boy and we're pretty sure that Gimli hopefully is too but he little one is still very shy and hard to pick up and handle (unlike Gizmo).

The squeaking doesn't seem to serious, they're rather quiet during the day even when they're out an about. It's normally as they're getting up for the night and just before they go back to sleep in the morning that they're squeaking away to eachother. And they're happy around eachother and sleep together so they seem fine (:

We're pretty sure that hopefully Gimli is a little boy too, we've had a check and actually uploaded some pictures on another post if you'd like to look? I'm worried about splitting them up if they're a different sex. Ino I have to because I can't be having any pups just yet, but I'm worried they'll get lonely as they seem really happy together at the moment.

Anyone got any advice for this? Thanks for the two comments I got (:

It's hard for us, the most complicated of all creatures, to understand, but hamsters don't get "lonely". They just don't. Plus, she'll/he'll have you! To be fair, I have seen mothers be a bit "lonely looking" after their babies are weaned, but they usually get over it and enjoy the sleep! Don't worry about it

I hope they're both boys though, they seem to be a lovely pair of gorgeous hammies.

Hi Hanhanboban. If it turns out that they are male and female, don't worry about them being "lonely". That's really a human emotion. Hammies get used to being alone really quickly and are perfectly fine living alone. Even hammies who have lived with a companion for most of their lives can adjust to living alone if one hammy passes away. But I do hope it turns out that they are both boys.

LOLOLOLOL. Colby...great minds think alike! We posted on top of each other
