Thought I'd tell you all a little bit more about Todd.
(and share a few of my favourite pics that I've snapped over the last 9 months) ....
I took Todd home in May last year, from the pet shop where I work.
He was in a small tank with his brother (nicknamed Nelson
), who looked identical to him, and they were such a sweet little pair. They were my favourite hams in stock at the time, and I could never walk pass their tank without peering in or dropping in a treat of some sort, like a stray piece of millet. I thought they looked so cute, always sat together on their little shelf, snuggled in the corner like two furry puddings. The two of them had started turning white, probably due to the lighting times in the shop, and they looked like the sweetest little patch-work fluffballs, so hansom.
On one day, just before closing up, I went to feed and water all the animals and of course I had to have a little cuddle with my favourite brothers. But when I opened up their nest I didn’t get any movement. I dug around for them and picked them up, and for one moment thought they had both died. They just lay flat in my hands, unmoving. But then they ever so slowly opened their eyes and looked around, but they were all floppy and cold. It seemed they had gone into a sort of semi-hibernation, even though it wasn’t cold, and I stuffed the tank with more bedding and gave them some mealworms and puppy kibble soaked in warm water to perk them up, and tried to warm them up in my hands. Nelson woke up quick quickly, and within half an hour was pottering around sniffing at the food I’d given him. Todd however was taking his time and was still snuggled in my hand, all dopey.
I knew I had already fallen in love with him, and I thought he would need some mothering. He was the shyer, more docile of the two and I always thought he was just a sweet little baby that needed to be looked after (I always call him ‘pup’, like he’s still a fluffy little nestling). So that was that and I smuggled him home.
That Sunday, he came up to college with me and became our second college hamster back in Room 6. Marley our 3-legged rescue was the other, though he has passed on now.
He loved living at college, being spoiled with treats and waddling around my desk helping me with my coursework.
He lives at home now, in his huge bin cage which he loves. He’s my funny, loveable, digging, whizzing, munching little wee man, and I love him.
My Toddy will be 1 year old very soon! I don’t know exactly when he was born, only that it was some time in early – mid March. I’ll have to buy him some presents! It’s so weird, it doesn’t feel like a whole year has passed. :/
He’s still my docile little baby, and loves his cuddles and fuss. I’ve never known a ham so eager for my attention, one that just wants to be cuddled and held, not just to be let out for a run-around (although of course, he does love to be let loose in my room!) He sits and listens out for my voice, waiting for his snuggles and waxworms. :L
I only have to put my hand in front of him, and he scrambles up my arm to sit on my shoulder. It’s so cute, when he’s off running around in my room I only have to call his name, and he comes scuttling back to sit on my knee or in my hand. He comes and sits in my bed with me and lets me cuddle him, and he loves playing in the duvet. Lol.
So for those who don’t much know him, that’s Todd! I love him to bits, if you can’t tell. Haha.
