Default Essy's thread

I thought I would finally give essy her own thread to post up some of the cute and frankly amusing photos I take of her.

Essy is an agouti WW/hybrid adopted from P@H beginning of July 2013. She seemed a little shy at first but became confident very quickly and now lets her sometimes absolutely nutty personality shine through

I started her off in a ferplast combi that a friend had given me. I was aware it was way too small but I was already making a "bin cage" and it has proved useful as a temporary cage when she takes holidays at my brothers flat down the road when I am away for more than a night for work.

My first photos of her, on her second day

Within a week or so she was very curious, by that point I had already been able to handle her, she ate off my hand etc

And very quickly her slightly bizarre personality started to come out

Besides her nutty behaviour, she could be surprisingly calm and was happy to sit on my hand being all cute

Before long I was happy to let her wonder around a bit in my flat, especially in my bed where she seemed particularly happy

But also had her favourite spot behind my pillows which led many photos like these

I still need to take some photos of her bin cage but will load them up at some point.

I know I haven't been on this forum for a while, but need to post a quick note that unfortunately Essy was put to sleep this morning.

2 weeks ago her right eye prolapsed, but the vets were fantastic. The eye would not stay in so they stitched shut her eyelid to help give it some time to heal and a week later the stitches came out.

The following week seemed to be going well, the irritation around the eye started to go down and everything seemed to be going back to normal. Until yesterday.

Her weight had dropped off very quickly, and she was having problems walking around. She seemed interested in food but never managed to eat anything. A mass had developed on her neck and was pushing on her throat and her jaw. The lower jaw was pushed to the side and she could not open her mouth at all. I made her soft foods such as scrambled egg to try and get something that she could lick to get something into her to help stop the declining weight but nothing worked.

I took her to the amazing vets this morning and they confirmed my suspicion that due to its size and position of the mass it was inoperable. My last hope that it was an abscess were dashed, the mass was very solid. They reckon that the mass had initially been in the cheek and was the cause of the initial prolapse, and that the mass kept growing. There had been no sign of it until the end of this last week, although I am still plagued by thoughts that I could have caught it earlier.

The vet told that masses like that grow very quickly, and there was likely nothing that could have been done. She was clearly in a lot of pain, could not eat or drink and was wasting away by the hour so I had to not be selfish and let her go, stop the worsening suffering.

Essy was my first pet as an adult but not my last. I had been going through a tough few months but she brought some light into my life. She was incredibly brave over the last 2 weeks and I desperately hope that she did not suffer too much.
