Default Detolf raised lid with a cage?

Has anyone used a smaller cage as a detolf lid?

I have a flat lid right now (that's split into 2 parts) and 1/4 of the cage is filled to the top with bedding so ideally i'd like to raise the 1/2 above this esp as my hamster seems to like hanging out on top of the bedding in this very cramped corner.

So I was thinking an 80x40cm cage top on top instead of one of my lid sections would work - before i go and buy a cage (my old cage was a 80x50 ) has anyone done this before?

Good/bad idea? things to consider?

I know this is a fairly old post, but if it's any help, we actually made a raised lid for our Detolf... (see photo!) it's hinged and has a mesh front.
