Default Wheel and cage accessories

I got my first hamster today, a male Syrian. I've always had rabbits and guinea-pigs but this is my first hamster and I'm a bit overwhelmed because I've realised despite doing research I don't really know what I'm doing. His cage came with a wheel but I've been told it will probably be too small for him as he grows. Can anyone recommend a suitable wheel for him? Also in his cage I've put a deep layer of bedding so he can dig into it and he's got 3 little houses stuffed with bedding, two little gnaw toys, some wooden stick things that bend and I put a toilet roll tube in there. Can anyone recommend anything else? He's been out with me, he's suprisingly chilled and has quite happily explored the living room and sat with me on the sofa but I've now left him in peace because he's had a long day!

Make sure he has a big enough cage! At least a 30 gallon aquarium sized cage. For wheels mine loved his wodent wheel! My dwarfs like the silent spinner. For a Syrian you will want a much bigger one. 12 inch. They also like to have hiding spots around the cage. If you use paper tubes put a slit all the way up the side in case he gets stuck. Have some sticks for him to gnaw on and a small (think stovetop stuffing) box with a small hole on one end is fun for them too.

sounds like you're doing a great job so far!
if you are US based, I would recommend the 12in silent runner or the niteangel silent spinner in the large or extra large wheel. I dont really know wheels in the UK though.
I don't know if you already have a suitable cage, but if not I highly recommend a bin cage. they're the cheapest kind and after trying many cages for my syrian, I found a bin cage to work out the best.
the only thing I can think of adding is a sand box and maybe some more bridges, platforms, etc. just stuff for him to climb and explore and have a more exciting cage.
I also came to hamsters from guinea pigs and while piggies are great, I really enjoyed the change. the work is a lot easier, and hamsters (especially Syrians!) tend to be more chilled and easier to tame.
hope this was helpful and good luck!
