Question Creating a narrow custom cage with multiple floors?

I am making a cage that is long but narrow. I want to aim for between 48inches in length. My daughter doesn't have much space in her room for her baby little bean. So I can't make it very wide. For example a detolf is 64inches by 16.5 inches wide. I wanted to modify a mainstay bookcase(I plan for it to be two 3-shelf mainstay's stuck together) (if I have to go longer to give more space one tall 5 shelf turned on it side but there wouldn't be a second level so the cage would only be 880inch total) That is all my daughter has room for in her bedroom. She really wants her baby in her room. Makes sense. We are all obssessed. Right now our(I mean her syrian) is in a temp cage. But I would like to have the new cage set up soon. I want it to have a lower layer filled with bedding and then have a wooden "shelf/floor" that runs along the whole length with about 2-3 inches of bedding along with everything else she needs. So it would be 48x11.5=550square inches of 12inch deep bedding and then of course a hole in the wood so she can climb up and then the floor space of the next layer would be the exact same minus the 2-3 inch hole for climbing up.

Now when I was asking on another place. They said the second layer would be mute and not counted so for the overall floor space it would be 550(which they said would be super bad for our syrian.) Everyone was saying the top level just wouldn't count but I couldn't understand why. It isn't some small little plastic level. Like it is a two story wooden house for the little bean. And would mean she has 1100 square inches to run around back and forth in and not 550 total. I really can't go wider in the spot without it making it impossible for us to open my kids bedroom door. Which I think we need to be able to do. lol

She will have the wheel, the food, enrichment and water all on the higher level so the higher level is absolutely going to get used for sure. So I remain so confused. Can the second floor really not be counted? Will she really go cage crazy if I do this cage? Going 72 inches long would be very hard to accomplish but I can force it if need be. But making the cage wider like people recommended would be almost impossible unless we wanted to never have her be able to shut or open her door properly ever again. Do syrians really dislike narrow spaces and need wide open spaces? If so then I guess the cage will have to come upstairs. But then the dishwasher might scare her. Oh side note, she has a big playpen in a different room already and also gets held and played with daily. She is very loved by every family member we got and a part of our family.

Unfortunately any sort of interrupted space won't count as total floor space, including shelves and levels no matter how large they are.

11.5 inches is also extremely narrow for a Syrian if I'm being honest. You'd be significantly limited in terms of enrichment and even things like wheel placement. Syrian sized things for an adult Syrian can be pretty big in general so it's important to keep that in mind.

If you can't rearrange furniture in that room to make space for a wider cage I would definitely choose a different room. General household noises tend to be adapted to, plus if you're putting the cage in a room with a door you can keep closed when you're running the dishwasher that should also help make things a bit quieter for your hamster.
