Re: Cage recommendations?
Shame they don’t “merge” the Grosvenor 100 and the Ritz so it has a small front door and a large top opening too!

Re: Cage recommendations?
Yes the doors is what I need to think about. The cage would need to live on the floor for the time being due to space, so I don't think a top door would be too much of a problem at this time. However, I know a lot of hamsters aren't keen on hands approaching them from above. Gosh this is a difficult decision! I've been searching places like Gumtree and other similar sites but there's literally nothing in my area, other than cages that are ridiculously unsuitable! And I don't drive which is making my search harder, as I found several Barney's and other cages (even ones mentioned in this thread!) in various parts of the country, with no way of collecting them!

Re: Cage recommendations?
Two of our Syrians happily live in Alaska cages which is another you could look for in the small ads.

Re: Cage recommendations?
That's an idea. A second hand Alaska would be quite cheap. I wouldn't worry to much about the top opening on the Grosvenor. As you say, front doors could be tricky if the cage was on the floor, and you can also just lower a tube in through the top for the hamster to walk into. They will probably get used to it. I use a rat tube for our hamster to walk into and he just hops in. And the height is not too high (especially with substrate in) so it's not like it would be a great height from the hamster coming from above. And it's the whole top that opens - which is what I meant about being able to come in at an angle from the top rather than straight down like a claw!
It would certainly be easy for getting large items in and out of the cage with that big top opening!
I think the 100cm Grosvenor would be a good option! It comes with a shelf which really helps. Less fiddly and less expensive for extras than the Plaza.

Re: Cage recommendations?
Another option is a second hand tank. You said you may get a dwarf and if it is a robo, a tank means no slipping through bars.

Re: Cage recommendations?
I think I'd still prefer a barred cage if it was me - and never had much luck finding used tanks!

Re: Cage recommendations?
To be honest I'm not a fan of the idea of a tank. They're quite heavy which isn't ideal for me. Thanks for all the help and ideas. Got some time to think about which one to get anyway!

Re: Cage recommendations?
That's very thoughtful of you Ria. I thought you were in the process of getting another one!
