Generalized softwood is very risky if I'm honest. It can be any wood species, and not all softwood species are safe for hamster use.

As far as pine goes, generally for toys even without being kiln dried you're unlikely to have the same kinds of impacts that pine as substrate would cause. That being said to complicate things further you can never fully remove all the phenols with kiln drying(as it doesn't get hot enough to actually remove the phenols), and it does seem like even kiln dried pine sort of reactivates in terms of phenols based on the observations of others - so I would not use any sort of pine as substrate personally just knowing the phenols will always be there.

With substrate, you have a significantly larger surface area than a toy or platform for example. I would lean towards toys definitely being made from pine as fairly safe but unfortunately a lot of companies use nails and questionable glues or other things to make them further unsafe.

But what about this platform, made of hardwood, is that okay? Trixie Rabbit Shelter & Resting Spot - Skjul & Hvileplass til kanin - Tropehagen.no - Dyrebutikk.no

The legs screw into the platform so it doesn't contain any nails.
