I saw the site you linked have hemp bedding. Hemp bedding is very popular in Germany.

Oh! I have never heard of uber. Right so you use paper bedding and you were asking which other beddings you could use. Now I get it! Sorry, I can be very slow. You could try hemp.

But you would still need some paper bedding as well. How else would the hamster make a nest?

Personally, i think the majority of substrate should be paper bedding for nesting and burrowing and anything else in smaller quantities for enrichment.

I know that in Germany they use mainly woodchips, Allspan which is 100% spruce i think but i've always wondered what a hamster is meant to use to build a nest.

That is a good point. I wonder what the hamsters do about making nests.

I do use uber in the cages, but the little spot where I have the wheel, I would love to try something else. Allspan is used here in norway as well, I dont like it. I think it is so funny to see the tunnels my animals makes out of uber.

The tunnels sound really cute. I can understand why you want to put something were the wheel is. You could try, birch chips or sand. The downside to sand is the sand can get in the wheel and it is really difficult to clean it out.

Aside from sand and beech chips you could try hemp, coco coir, aspen, wood chips. I think etsy sells different substrates in smaller quantities.

I have also recently been to a reptile shop looking at different substrates but i just don't know if they are safe for hamsters so opted for sand to keep a wheel in place.
