Default 31cm Rodipet wheel

Just wondering if anyone has the 31cm Rodipet wheel and what it's like? It's bigger than I had been looking for (31cm is internal diameter - it's actually about 32.5cm in total width!). Because I've been waiting for over a month for the 27cm ones to come back in stock.

I have the 21cm one for Pip. But I'm aware the larger ones can wobble a bit. Although haven't tried one recently and they've changed since I last tried one.

Raffy is definitely needing a bigger wheel now he's grown - he still has the 10.5" Carolina Storm wheel at the moment.

I'm wanting something to screw to the bars of the Plaza or I'd just get the Karlie 28cm wood wheel. Don't think I can screw that to the bars of the plaza or it'll pull the knock down cage apart! (Used to screw those upside down from the roof).

I already sent the Getzoo 30cm one back (about 28cm internally) because it was very smelly - and the smell hadn't worn off after a couple of weeks.

I got so fed up waiting for the Rodipet ones to come back in stock that I considered the Niteangel wheel but there is no way I'm spending £60 on a hamster wheel! Now the 31cm ones are in stock but not the 27cm ones. And the 31cm also costs an extra 10 euros!

Anyway, I've sent off for it. The 31cm rodipet wheel. Ouch! Still ended up being £60 with postage (the 27cm one would have been about £9 less). Reviews on Amazon.com were all positive. Whereas the Niteangel was £62 inc delivery and 11".

I bet it will seem huge as about 13" externally! I'm sure it'll be lovely to run on though. I shall plastikote it for longevity!

Will be interesting to see if you like it. How long will it take till you get it?

I want to upgrade Clive's 28cm Trixie wheel but don't know what to. He's on the small side but very heavy pawed so needs a sturdy wheel. The Silent Runner would have too much bounce for him.

I'm quite tempted with a Niteangel wheel.
What made you chose the Rodipet over the Niteangel wheel?

Well originally I just didn't want to spend such a huge amount of money on a wheel! Plus it's plastic and could break (I have trodden on many plastic and ceramic things in the playpen too!). But ended up spending the same amount.

Actually I'm not even sure it'll fit in the cage without rearranging something! Widthwise - just looked tonight.

I've had a rodipet one before - they're well made and don't break or fall apart. Plus I do like the cork for their feet Although it's not essential. It's a good long term wheel. It'll probably be easier to attach to the bars because it will need a piece of wood between the wheel and bars (so it spins as if on the stand). I can chop the old stand from Pip's wheel to be the right depth piece of wood. With the Niteangel being plastic, can't really chop a plastic stand (that one needs something between wheel and fastenings to attach to bars too).

But perhaps I jumped the gun and should have waited longer for the 27cm one!

One thing I do like about the rodipet wheel over the karlie/trixie wood wheels is - there is no lip at the front - it's completely level. Doesn't really matter but works well for an old hamster when the wheel needs to be at substrate level and easy for them to get in and out of.

The trixie plastic wheel is not good for old hamsters - there was a case on here of a hamster getting a leg caught trying to get out of it when older and having a leg injury. It has quite a high exit point. Silent runner was ok for that though.

27cm is just over 10.5in. Wouldn't that be the same size as the one he has now?

It's a plastic one i want. I wished Rodipet would do a plastic wheel like the Wodent wheel instead of the Heurika which i don't like.

Good point. It would be slightly bigger than the currrent one. The Carolina storm wheel is max 10.5 inches across the front but tapers a lot smaller towards the back. In the middle it's probably more like 9.5 to 10". But good point. Rodipet should have a 28cm one (11"). Having said that, I haven't measured the inside of the 28" trixie wheel - most wheel sizes are external measurements. The Rodipet ones are internal diameter measurements.

But 32.5cm external measurement is huge! I think the other thing is having a wheel that has a flat running surface the same depth front to back (which the Carolina wheel doesn't have and same with the Heureka - so I'm not keen on that either).

I do think traditional wheels with a flat track are easier/better to run on. Although a hamster will run on anything!

I think I needed a change from the Silent runner as well (although it's been an expensive change) and I wasn't happy about the running track little gap. I've had three of those before and never had that gap before. It probably would have been fine but I just took against it for that.

I know what you mean about preferring a plastic wheel - much easier for wiping out - possibly - although the niteangel one does have a seam where the front meets the back and I did see reviews about how to get the pee and poops out of that! Wood wheels are fine if plastikoted (and the rodipet ones wear better than the trixie/karlie ones). They're also quite lightweight.

Looks like I was lucky to get that 31cm wheel as that’s out of stock again already (as are all the other sizes still). They must be having supply and demand issues. But not for the Heureka wheel for some reason. I’m also wondering why Rodipet stopped selling silent runner wheels. They used to. Before that they used to sell wodent wheels.

Has your wheel arrived yet? What is it like? What type of cage do you have? My rats have a 16 inch wheel in the savic plaza (they're old now with mobility issues and needed something lower level) and it's a bit of a squeeze. I have to stagger the bedding to stop everything tucking under the wheel, it's still usable but makes a lot of noise when they insist on making a nest under it.
