Re: How much is 20kg of fitch bedding in Litres?
If i had more storage space indoors, i would definitely switch over to Fitch. It is far more economical than Kaytee.

Re: How much is 20kg of fitch bedding in Litres?
I tried store bought paper bedding once, and wasn't a big fan. Instead I invested in a good paper shredder, and make batches of bedding at home with paper towels. It pays itself off fast, and it works really well. Seems to keep odor down great with how absorbent it is, plus holds a burrow.
I can get 15 rolls of paper towels here for $13, and it's enough to fill up my ham's enclosure about 6 times. Plus the leftover tubes are great for tunnels & homemade toys.

Very creative! I've seen people make their own bedding from soaking toilet rolls but this sounds a lot easier! I can't imagine sheets of paper towels going through my shredder somehow - it struggles with normal paper!

Re: How much is 20kg of fitch bedding in Litres?
I've used cheap toilet paper for my rats before. It was a fairly budget friendly option, but the big reason I stuck with that for so long was the lack of dust especially compared to typical storebought products. I can't say for sure it would work as good with hamsters and you'd have to be careful to choose toilet paper that breaks down fairly easily in water(which really should be done with any paper if you're going the DIY route) - as well as nothing dyed or scented of course.
I use torn up paper bags now though with the rats and that has been the clear favorite for them. It's also easier to prepare as needed, plus they're able to form nests pretty well with that - and just like the toilet paper option, no dust. Again I can't say for sure how good it would do on its own with hamsters, but I'd imagine a thick enough layer could work.

Her enclosure is 675 square inches, I keep her bedding at least 6 inches deep. Usually 8 inches around the nesting boxes.

Absolutely right, it does have to be a good shredder. I have a decent enough one that I can leave it on constantly, it auto shuts off when overheating and finished with the roll.
