Re: How much is 20kg of fitch bedding in Litres?
It really is. And Serendipity, in my opinion the bad batches are just the bales that come with seemingly less quality control. It may be because I had skinny pigs that it made it more noticeable, but occasionally after a cage clean I'd definitely notice a lot more dust, especially on the pigs themselves. Otherwise, was definitely a good bedding.

Skinnies would've been fine with the harder bits so no need to sift through it. I'm with Serendipity on this, I too have had many bales over the years for a variety of rodents and never had an issue. It's recycled so there's slight variation but nothing harmful or damaging and certainly doesn't affect the quality of it.

I've just read through all the responses. Serendipity, does fitch hold burrows well?

Yes it does - it holds them surprisingly well. I think most members would agree with that. At one time people used to mix it with another substrate to help hold burrows well but it doesn't seem to make a huge difference.

Alright, thank you! I'll probably go with fitch as it seems to have alot more pros than cons.

Posted at the same time! You can see the size of the 20kg bale on the video above.

Honestly, in my opinion it's one of the best on the market. How big is your cage? When I had 4 hamsters (2 x 100x50 and 2x 80x50 cages) I could get good depth of bedding in all cages with 1 20kg bale. Give it a go and tell us what you think ☺️

Ambient, I like it, I am a convert for sure, i think i have tried all bedding apart from the small pet select and tea bag (won't try that as can't guarantee it is compostable)
I like fitch that much that I went from using several different substrates in a cage to just that. Give it a go, I think you will like it.
The only reason I buy the 4kg bales is that It's easier for me to move them. I used to get the 15kg in a box, but they don't seem to do that one anymore. But it was a pain to move, until you started using some of it

Re: How much is 20kg of fitch bedding in Litres?
Ok so a bit bigger than my 100 x 50 cage with 6" of bedding in. If you're looking at 12" of bedding in a 100cm cage it would be maximum two thirds of a 10kg bag. If you're talking about 120cm cage I'd say you could use the full 10kg bag for 12" compressed.
So a 10kg bag would do it and a 20kg bag would do it twice. But it made my head hurt trying to think about the maths lol - that was just vague.
I'll attempt the maths. 100 x 50 cage is 5000 sq cm and 120 x 50 is 6000 sq cm,
So if about half a 10 kg bag (ie 5kg fitch) fills 6" in a 100cm cage (5000sq cm) then that is 1000 sq cm per kg. Meaning it should be about 6kg of Fitch for 6" deep in a 120cm cage and 12kg of Fitch for 12" deep in a 120cm cage. So more than 10kg!
Assuming you compress it down really firmly and use more - you will still have leftover from a 20kg bag I am sure!

Re: How much is 20kg of fitch bedding in Litres?
I'm not very good with litres but hopefully this will help.
This 14 litre bag of carefresh (size wise) fits at least 3 x into a 4kg bag of fitch first. There is also more of the fitch first bag left at the top - so rough estimate is more than 42 litres in a 4kg bag as they roughly look about the same compressed state. so 20kg could be a bit less or a bit more than 210litres as this is all just rough guess work

This pic shows the 4kg bag of fitch first with the carefresh 14lt in front of it, and an 85 litre of megazorb behind it and a bag of aubiose hemp (20kg) bedding at the back
