Default Placement of the water bottle

I have a Rodipet drinking set which is meant to be for dwarf hamsters. I realise it is too high as Orko has to stand to drink. I put something in front of the bottle so he could stand on it. Since then he drinks less water. I tried removing that and he drinks again.

I have bought velcro and used it to lower the bottle. Since then I have read of hamsters trying to climb their water bottle and it falling on them. I have been looking for other free standing bottle holders but they have poor reviews. Does anybody know if it is safe for me to have his bottle lowered using the velcro? I was going to buy another bottle and velcro it to another place so he the choice of two bottles. He will not use a water bowl.

The other option is to buy the niteangel free standing water bottle holder. I am just not sure if I can use another water bottle as their bottle has poor reviews while the actual holder seems good.

I find the 75ml Classic water bottles (the ones sold by Rodipet) can be safely hung from the side of a glass or wood veneer enclosure with self-adhesive velcro, but probably not from bare wood (the velcro wouldn't stick so you might need to staple it).

Alternatively I sometimes use these cubes to hold water bottles (dangerous fluffy bedding removed first of course):

They fit the Savic water bottle perfectly and will also work with the Classic water bottle.

Thank you Sushi. That is the very water bottle I have. If you think it is safe then I will velcro it. I was hoping Orko would use a water bowl. I guess not. Lol.

By the way, I love your idea of using the log to hold sprays.

If Orko is happy to drink standing up, i'd leave the bottle the way it is.

I would get a second bottle though and place it in a different part of the enclosure.

Personally, i'd leave a water bowl in as well. Just because Orko doesn't use it just now doesn't mean that he won't use it in future.

The inexpensive plastic stands with the little hidey hole are popular with Robos and they are quite low. I've always used the 75ml classic bottles and replace them from time to time. Even though i use filtered water the limescale builds up around the spout.

As for reviews: i wouldn't pay too much attention to them and rely on your own common sense. Some people get paid to write reviews, apparently.

Oh good! I was worried he would hurt his neck by having to stand. Good idea about leaving the bowl in case he uses it one day.

I heard that hamsters can get stuck in those plastic stands with the hidey holes. Have you ever used one?

Thank you for the tips about reading the reviews.

Gertie would get stuck alright but not the Robos. Yes, i had them for Robos but they often move out with them.

I cannot work out what you have done there? Have you put the water bottle on a container of marbles?

You see it better in this one with the paper still on. A small soft drinks bottle with the top cut off to fit a 75ml classic bottle and a hole made for the spout. I weigh it down with glass marbles or pebbles.

If you want your enclosure to look neat and furnished with proper hamster stuff this won't look right but it works well for dwarfs.

Wow, Ria! That is such a clever and cheap idea! You should make a thread on here with such tips. Thank you.
