Mesh isn't too difficult to work with honestly once you know what to do, but it can definitely lead to injury if you're not careful(and frustration, headache, etc). Personally I gave up halfway through a DIY rat cage between the physical pain of mesh and zip ties, but it's a lot easier when you only have to make something smaller like a lid. The zip ties were honestly much worse to me especially since I was having to use so many while trying to avoid using any sort of tool to tighten them!

I would definitely add a layer of wood to cover the exposed mesh edges though just to be safe with a DIY lid. I remember hearing about precut mesh sheets in the UK too and that would make things even less difficult. You really don't have to be too creative or even necessarily good at DIY things to pull off a decent functional lid.

Good point - it just needs to be safe and functional. You could just fix the mesh to the outside of the wood and cover the edges as Amity says. Less painful to the fingers, especially if you get the mesh cut to size at the diy store.

Hi having just made my first lid, it is doable, but i advise cutting straight corners if you do it, i.e. 90 degrees, i thought i would be fancy and cut mine at 45 degrees and if you are not very good at hand sawing it can be a disaster - as i found out!
If you do make your own, I would also suggest drilling pilot holes first before adding the corner brackets, so you don't split the wood.
The mesh, you can just bend over at the edges so no sharp edges to be concerned about, I have done that on 3 of my cages now. Then you just need a staple gun, which you might be able to borrow from someone if you don;t have one. I borrowed my mums, but also in my local town we have a library of stuff where you can hire for a few £ the tools you need, if you don't have what you need and don;t want to buy, it could be worth looking to see if you have something similar. Goodluck whichever way you decide to go.
