Glass lid on Aquariums
Hi,
I've been considering an 80 gallon aquarium for my hamster, however, I'm unsure on whether it's compulsry a mesh lid is used? Would a glass lid cause poor ventiliaton?
A response would be appreciated.

Re: Glass lid on Aquariums
Hello AmbientOcclusion. A glass lid would not provide enough ventilation. I have seen people creating a lid using mesh and wood. There are many videos on youtube with instructions.

I agree. A glass lid does not provide sufficient ventilation.
There are other issues caused by lack of ventilation like overheating of the tank in hot weather and condensation caused by the hamster's urine which can lead to mould and harmful bacteria.
It would not create a comfortable and safe environment for a hamster to live in.
If you don't have tools or basic DIY skills you can get a made to measure lid through etsy or go to a B&Q if you live in the UK. They could cut a piece of plywood to the required size and cut out panels for meshing as well. All you need to do then is get a staple gun and mesh to staple it on from the outside.

Re: Glass lid on Aquariums
A mesh lid is critical for proper ventilation when it comes to hamsters. Glass lids don't provide any ventilation at all, and lids with holes just drilled in provide barely any ventilation and are also unsuitable just like glass lids.

Re: Glass lid on Aquariums
I would get solid wood over plywood(kiln dried pine or another safe wood species to be safe) in that situation, but it's definitely a good idea to get the wood cut in store. The reason for solid over plywood being that it'll be significantly more durable without the unfortunate risk of unsealed edges etc breaking/chipping/otherwise getting damaged over time and such that plywood has.
