Default Holiday Cage

We're going on holiday for 2 weeks, and a relative will hamster-sit our Syrian. We have a DIY viv that is 120 x 40 base. The viv is a bit heavy to transport, and it might be too fiddly to expect our relative to come and spot clean him in the house. So we are thinking of putting him in a spare cage for the two weeks stay. Does anyone have any good (cheap) recommendations of cages for two weeks? How big would be sensible for two weeks?

I think the smallest you could get away with is a Hamster Heaven but personally, i don't think it's a good idea to move him into another cage.

Oh sorry, i think i misunderstood though. You need a portable cage to take him to your relative? I first thought your relative was going to come to your house and spot cleaning in the large DIY cage was too fiddly.

Still, i'd go for a Hamster Heaven or Alaska. They are often available on Gumtree for 20-30.

Yes, it's a cage that I can take and leave at my relatives house with him in for the two weeks. He's quite relaxed about change.

That's alright then. Hamsters react so differently to changes. Are you looking to buy a new or second hand cage? A large Ikea Samla is only 15 and it doesn't take much to mesh the lid. Wilko used to sell a piece of mesh for 4 but not sure if they still do. Also, the Samla has wheels and you could use it for storage after your holiday.

I don't mind whether new or second hand, as long as it's nothing too expensive new.

I'd go for a Samla if you can't find a cage second hand for around 20/25 which would be the cost of a Samla meshed.
Are you looking for something bigger?

You could approach rescues or people who rehome and ask to borrow a spare cage for a small donation.

If you'd live near me, i'd let you borrow a spare Hamster Heaven.

I'd go with this (Hamster Sky) - it's cheaper than the Hamster heaven but the same size. But remove the external tubes and block them off (the cage comes with hole blockers).

Your hamster is used to being in a large cage so anything smaller wouldn't be good.

For taking to another house, the base stacks quite neatly inside the bars to make a shallow package to transport. Take a load of bedding in a bag from his old cage, and a bag of toys, wheel etc any other cage contents and set the cage up when you get to the friend's house.

So the bedding and toys and wheel will smell familiar when he goes in there. It's a good spare cage to have and easy to store. You won't get anything new for less than about 50 I reckon.

Best option would be hamster staying in his own tank and your relative popping in once a day to feed/water him and have a chat with him. Is that possible?

For a tank style cage the duna multy might be good as well. It's slightly smaller than the Hamster Sky but he may settle better in a tank style if that's what he's used to. You can't fit an 11" wheel in it though - 10" possibly so it would need to be a 9" wheel for the wheel which means getting a new wheel too.
