Best option would be a large zoozone. Tank style and a good size. But they're not cheap any more. They used to be about 50 and now about 70 to 80. The bars on top would need meshing as the spacing is too wide for a hamster (but not that big a job). It's a tank style with enough space. And an 11" wheel would fit.

How active is he?/How shy is he? Do you think he'd cope in a smaller cage?

I think if you need a holiday cage, just budget the price into the cost of the holiday and get the best solution that will work for the hamster He has to live in it and not get too stressed. Presumably he won't be getting much out of cage time that week and will be with different people and in a different place. So the best environment for him would be important. I'd go with the zoozone even though it's a bit pricey, use current wheel and toys and house from current cage.

Thanks! He's a lazy boy and likes to keep to his bed. He comes out for cuddles but usually doesn't roam around much. I'll have a look into some of the cages. I'm happy to spend ~50ish for something, so I'll have a look at some of the cages. He hasn't been in a cage before, but I'm sure he'll manage.

It sounds like less space wouldn't worry him too much then but I would go for at least 80 x 50cm. Thing is you could get a cage for 50 and then find his wheel doesn't fit and have to get another wheel! Which would add to the cost. So there's that to bear in mind as well. What wheel does he have currently? I think I would try for a tank style if you can as he's having a change of cage and environment and it's quite a change between solid sides and open bars. He "might" take to a barred cage - but then not settle back in his tank and get stressed. Or he might bar chew constantly. If he hasn't been in a barred cage before, you won't know. Very annoying that the zoozone has gone up in price so much since the pandemic (or possibly brexit/import charges). A lot of cages have gone up in price hugely.

Would you be up for making a bin cage? If so this one is an ideal size and supposed to be easy to cut without cracking. It's hard to find bins big enough for a Syrian. Still doesn't work out cheap as they've also gone up in price and it's 60 for the box. Add the cost of mesh, tape and tools and it's not much of a cheaper option than the large Zoozone.

I think your best bet may be the standard sized Duna Multy and get an 8" or 9" wheel as well to fit it. But a wheel could be another 10 to 20. I'll look to see if I can find the large zoozone cheaper anywhere as then your current wheel would fit.

Nope - about 80 everywhere for large Zoozone. It's hard enough finding cages these days anyway!

Aha! Here you are. Large zoozone for 55. You just need a small piece of mesh to mesh the top bars. An 11" wheel will fit. They might charge postage on top I guess

I think if he was in the smaller duna multy he might want out of cage time more often without going a bit stir crazy, whereas something like the zoozone he might be happy just staying in it for a week.

The 145l really useful box used to be 35 at Wickes. I thought it was a UK make so can't see how it could have gone up to 60!
