He's blocked himself in!
I went out this morning and came back to this! (See attached pic.)
His multi-chamber hide has two entrances - one at the front (where I put a cardboard tunnel to give access under the bedding) and one on top, accessed by a ramp, which used to be the one he used the most but a few days ago he blocked it up with bedding. The hide stood on a thin layer of hemp, then he had some Kaytee inside for bedding and more Kaytee packed around the outside up to the roof height of the hide (which is also level with the top of the cage tray). Some rooms in the hide have a wooden floor while others are open to the hemp below.
As you'll see from the pic, he seems to have spent the morning evicting all Kaytee and hemp from his hide! It had completely blocked his one remaining entrance tunnel and I was worried he'd suffocate, so I lifted the lid of the hide slightly and found him glaring up at me. I put the roof back down carefully, and since then he's been scuffling about even more in there - goodness knows what he's doing! I'm not sure what to do - should I just leave him to make his own tunnels, or should I remove the bedding he's kicked out of the hide? I'm worried he'll run out of air in there if I leave it where it is!

Re: He's blocked himself in!
Apologies, I'm having difficulty attaching the pic. Basically there's a massive pile of bedding blocking off the end of his front access tunnel and burying his food bowl and sand bath! The top access hole is also blocked with bedding - he did this a few days ago.

Re: He's blocked himself in!
I wouldn’t personally worry too much as kaytee clean and cosy when broken up I think will always allow for air to move in and out. It’s hard to make a solid block of it but if you are concerned you could make an air hole.
My hamster is terrible for this though! She’s completed blocked one entrance with bedding, she actually broke one side of her house and pulled it inward so it’s more triangular, she also chewed a hole underneath to make a hide for food. On the outskirts of her cage is stuffed with bedding, and lastly the only other entrance she’s barricaded with chew toys! She drags these to get out in the evening.
I do notice if my doors been left open and the cats snuck in without my knowledge suddenly the barricades become reinforced so maybe it could be a sign something is scaring them more. If you have other pets definitely keep them separate.
But at the same time I don’t like touching their set ups too much because it makes them incredibly anxious. I could’ve killed my OH the other day when he took out all the bedding on the outskirts because it was dropping through the bars on to the floor. But he couldn’t understand why Mitzi had become so skittish in her cage when he’d done it. It is their safety so it’s okay to slightly rearrange or clean if there is an issue but try not to tamper too much with their houses.

Re: He's blocked himself in!
We have a cat but he's not allowed in the room and never has been since we got Snowy. The kids were out with me all morning and hubby was working in the garden, so Snowy has had a nice quiet room all to himself.
I made an airhole and he blocked it off again. There was loads more scuffling for a while and I know he was under the heap of bedding because I could see it heaving. Then he went back in his hide and everything went quiet. I got worried, so I removed the pile of bedding that was blocking the entrance. It's spot clean day today anyway and I couldn't have cleaned anywhere without disturbing the pile, plus he'd buried his food bowl and sand bath! As soon as I moved it, he came out and sniffed around. He's probably mad at me now, but I'll leave it a couple of days now before cleaning the pee-soaked bedding from inside his hide to make up for it!

Re: He's blocked himself in!
He will be fine. My syrian hamster Moonbeam blocks the entrance off to hers every morning when she's going to bed for the day. All my hamsters have blocked off the holes in top of multi chambers if they have them. They will have air pockets, they won't suffocate.

Re: He's blocked himself in!
Thanks for the reassurance. If he does it again I will leave him alone. I just hope I haven't stressed him out too much!
